The Latest: Taylor Swift not at home at time of crash

WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) — The Latest on the investigation into a car chase that ended in a crash at the Rhode Island home of Taylor Swift: (all times local):

3:10 p.m.

Authorities in Rhode Island say Taylor Swift was not at home when a stolen car crashed into the gates of her beach house after a police chase.

Westerly Police Chief Shawn Lacey said Wednesday that authorities do plan to ask for surveillance video from the singer’s property to help the investigation.

Swift has recently reported trouble with stalking, but Lacey says there’s no indication the vehicle’s occupants knew who owned the home.

Authorities say the chase started around 1 a.m. Tuesday when an officer in a neighboring town noticed the car had no license plates and tried to pull it over.

The 19-year-old driver faces charges including reckless driving and receiving stolen goods.

Police say a car stolen in Connecticut has crashed into the gates of singer Taylor Swift’s beachfront Rhode Island home.

Westerly Police Chief Shawn Lacey tells The Sun of Westerly that officers in the neighboring Rhode Island town of Hopkinton started pursuing the vehicle at about 1 a.m. Tuesday.

He says the car sped away from several attempts to stop it, reaching speeds of up to 65 mph. The vehicle eventually crashed into the wall outside Swift’s property in Westerly before ricocheting into the main entrance gate at about 35 mph.

The driver, 19-year-old Shykeim Edwin Lewis, of Hartford, Connecticut, faces several charges and was held on $10,000 bond. No attorney was listed in online court records.

The car’s three other occupants were not charged.
