Criminal Investigation Underway After On-Field Collision Kills Spanish Soccer Player

Sports can be a brutal business, but few athletes ever imagine that an ordinary play could cost them their lives.

That nightmare became reality for Spanish soccer player Jesús de Miguel, who died Tuesday following a violent on-field collision during a second-division match, ESPN reported.

De Miguel, a 30-year-old forward for CD Tenerife, suffered cardiac arrest after colliding with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during Monday’s match. Spanish police have since opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter.

The frightening incident unfolded in stoppage time, with the score tied 2-2, when both players converged on a long ball near midfield.

Owono had rushed well outside his penalty area in an apparent attempt to clear the ball when he struck de Miguel in the chest.

The goalkeeper received a straight red card, but the seriousness of the collision quickly became apparent.

De Miguel initially dropped to his knees, clutching his torso, before collapsing onto his back as both teammates and opponents rushed to his aid.

The match was abandoned, and de Miguel was transported to a hospital, where he later died.

De Miguel’s team, CD Tenerife, confirmed the awful news on Tuesday.

“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., of Jesús de Miguel Alameda,” the team posted, according to X’s translation.

“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness. We stand alongside his devastated family, alongside his loved ones, alongside all of Tinerfeñismo that today weeps for this cruel outcome.”

(“Tinerfeñismo” is a term for regional, local pride in Tenerife, which is a Spanish Canary Island where the soccer team is located.)

While the criminal investigation is underway, Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui told Spanish news agency EFE that criminal proceedings were unlikely because the collision occurred during play.

Spanish law requires judicial investigations into deaths from non-natural causes, including accidents.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves throughout the soccer world, with tributes pouring in from some of the sport’s biggest names.

“There are no words. My condolences and lots of strength to all his family and friends,” Lionel Messi wrote on Instagram, per ESPN.

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé similarly expressed his sorrow, while former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, who owns FC Andorra, wrote on X: “I am sorry with all my soul. Rest in peace, Jesús.”

The Spanish soccer federation postponed several domestic cup matches, while UEFA announced moments of silence at its games throughout the week.

Meanwhile, another disturbing collision in Spain’s LaLiga Hypermotion second division has raised additional concerns among fans about player safety.

The separate incident, which reportedly left another player unconscious, has prompted concerned reactions on social media as fans grapple with the dangers of violent on-field challenges.

Such life-threatening collisions are exceptionally rare, but they are not unprecedented.

ESPN noted that 19-year-old Spanish goalkeeper Raúl Ramírez died last year after suffering head injuries during a fifth-division match. Similar collisions claimed the lives of Ukrainian goalkeeper Serhiy Perkhun in 2001 and Spanish goalkeeper José Antonio Gallardo in 1987.

For Tenerife, however, the tragedy is about far more than soccer.

De Miguel leaves behind his wife and young daughter, according to the Associated Press.

A sport built around competition, passion, and the pursuit of victory has now been forced to confront something far more important.

And for a family mourning a husband and father who never came home from a soccer match, no result on the field will ever make things right.
