50 Tons of Meth Found in Underground Mexican Drug Lab
In a scene that could be straight out of hit television series “Breaking Bad,” Mexican marines found a huge underground methamphetamine lab on Friday, according to Reuters.
The lab was found in the mountains outside the capital of Sinaloa state.
If the Sinaloa drug cartel rings a bell, that’s because it was infamously run by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman for years. Guzman is currently facing trial in the United States.
What makes the discovery both remarkable and terrifying is the fact that Mexican officials found 50 tons of meth in the lab.
The drugs were reportedly incinerated on site, due to the difficulty in transporting that much meth from a remote location.
The meth had been hidden in two areas, along with barrels full of chemicals needed to produce the drug.
The marines were tipped off to the underground lab when reports began circulating about rampant drug production in the Alcoyonqui municipality.
There are no indications whether Gustavo Fring was involved.
This is obviously a serious issue and underscores why secure borders are such a fundamental necessity.
America’s opioid addiction problem is already well-chronicled.
What isn’t mentioned nearly enough is the startling role Mexico plays in the problem.
According to Reuters, Mexico is a major supplier of meth to the United States and the number one source of heroin in this country.
A secure border and a physical wall are unlikely to completely eradicate the problem, but they’re a crucial first step.
The notion that all Mexican immigrants are trying to smuggle drugs into America is patently absurd. But some certainly are. And that’s more than enough reason to tighten up border security.
There are undoubtedly countless other major drug labs riddled in both Mexico and the United States. Fifty tons of meth is hopefully an outlier in terms of sheer quantity. Finding and cracking down on all of them is an almost impossible endeavor.
That being said, whatever can be done should be done — and that starts with securing our nation’s borders.
