Florida Sticks It to Sanctuary Cities, ACLU Then Issues a Travel Warning

Share

The Florida House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday that would effectively ban sanctuary cities, and the ACLU responded with a “travel alert” against Florida.

The bill that prohibits “sanctuary policies” and requires “governmental agencies, and law enforcement agencies to use best efforts to support the enforcement of federal immigration law” was passed in the House with a margin of 69-47, according to NBC News.

In other words, Florida cities will no longer be able to harbor illegal immigrants and refuse to cooperate with immigration authorities.

Now it’s up to the Florida Senate to pass Senate Bill 168, their version of the bill, in order for the bill to become law.

Republican state Rep. Cord Byrd, who sponsored the bill, explained on Fox Business Network last week that the bill will help federal and local authorities cooperate to find potentially dangerous illegal immigrants.

“Here’s the problem: Our state and local law enforcement officers don’t have access to the federal indices, so we don’t know if that person in Florida is using an alias,” Byrd said. “They may have committed a serious violent crime in another state, been deported, and now have come back into the United States.”

“We see that scenario over and over and over. So before we release this potentially dangerous person back into our communities, we want to know whether or not the federal immigration authorities have reason to detain this person further.”

Would you want to live in a sanctuary city?

In addition to the normal text of the bill, the Senate is considering an amendment that would allow Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to “initiate judicial proceedings in the name of the state” against local or state officials who do not cooperate with enforcing immigration laws, according to Miami’s WFOR-TV.

“The governor is supportive of this measure which reiterated his constitutional authority to remove an executive or administrative state, county or municipal” officer for violating state law, DeSantis spokeswoman Helen Ferre said.

All things considered, the bill would only make Florida safer if it became law. Potentially dangerous illegal immigrants would be more easily removed and law-abiding Americans would have nothing to worry about.

But that didn’t stop the far-left ACLU from issuing a “travel alert” against Florida.

“If Florida State Bill 168 and House Bill 527 pass, it would undermine local governments’ ability to protect the civil rights of their residents by forcing local officials to cooperate with ICE,” ACLU claimed.

“It would also put immigrants at risk of violence, potentially forcing victims and witnesses to stay silent for fear of deportation.

“Both Florida residents, citizens and non-citizens, and travelers could face risks of being racially profiled and being detained without probable cause.”

ACLU characterizes illegal immigrants as innocent “residents,” but doesn’t consider the safety of legal residents who are forced to accept potentially violent illegal immigrants into their communities.

No sane person would want to live in a sanctuary city and be forced to accept potentially violent illegal immigrants — not even virtue-signaling Hollywood liberals.

Banning sanctuary cities would only make Florida safer for legal residents.
