Ocasio-Cortez Shows Disdain for Rural America in Mocking, Anti-Electoral College Video: 'Lots of Votes Here!'

Share

This is what passes for brainpower in the Democratic Party these days.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, everybody’s favorite democratic socialist from the Big Apple, decided to show off her intellectual acumen this week with an Instagram post that oh-so-cleverly reveals there are large parts of the United States where the land is undeveloped.

So naturally, that’s an argument for upending the Constitution.

The congresswoman didn’t identify what part of the country she was passing through but posted a video showing miles of flat plains, with a grating voiceover that sounds like it came out of junior high homeroom.

“All right everyone it’s been a minute. We’re coming to you live from the Electoral College,” she said.

“Many votes here, as you can see. Very efficient way to choose leadership of the country. I mean, I can’t think of any other way. Can you?”

The dig is clear. Some states are more populated than others, therefore, to the Democratic mind, the Electoral College system that spreads the power of electing the president beyond the densely packed coastal areas is a recipe for injustice.

Is Ocasio-Cortez showing off her own ignorance?

Ocasio-Cortez followed up her video trick by calling the Electoral College a ”scam” and declaring that because of “racial disparities in certain states, the Electoral College effectively weighs white voters over voters of color, as opposed to a “one person, one vote” system where all our votes are counted equally.”

Of course, it always comes back to race for Democrats in 2019. And what Ocasio-Cortez thinks she’s displaying is wit, intelligence and the kind of revolutionary spirit liberals often mistake for intelligence.

But what she’s actually showing is how deeply her party dislikes and distrusts Middle America.

For 2019 Democrats, Americans who don’t live in coastal population powerhouses such as New York and California simply should not count at all.

And even more glaringly, she’s showing an utter ignorance of the foundations of the country — and the unmatched genius of the men of the Constitutional Convention who hammered out the compromises that would bring the country into being.

Liberals might want to look it up sometime, but the Electoral College was one of the keys to the adoption of the Constitution — the same document Abraham Lincoln was defending when he preserved the Union throughout the Civil War, eventually helping destroy slavery in the United States in the process.

It’s pretty clear AOC’s video was aimed at liberals who already agree with her — and who overwhelmingly live in parts of the country that would not be affected one bit if the Electoral College were abolished.

To the rest of the country, she was simply being insulting. And the rest of the country returned the favor.

Ocasio-Cortez won her seat in Congress by surprising veteran Democrat Joe Crowley in the 2018 Democratic primary of New York’s 14th Congressional District.

It could be, as Nancy Pelosi once said, that a glass of water with a “D” on it could win in a district like that.

But Ocasio-Cortez is playing on a national stage now, and her pretensions to being an intellectual — or even reasonably well educated — aren’t well served by videos that only make her appear obnoxiously immature and ignorant.

Courting Middle American voters by putting down the very system that gives their vote a voice is about as intelligent as a business trying to woo customers by insulting them.

Gillette just tried that, and it isn’t ending well. If Democrats like AOC keep insulting American voters like this, it’s not going to end well for them either.
