Woman Walks in for "Safe, Legal, Rare" Abortion, Family Horrified by How She Came Back Out
During and after his eight long years in office, William Jefferson Clinton offered us plenty of quotable untruths. The one we seem to most remember involved a certain Miss Lewinsky.
However, the most pernicious of them all is one that he — and his Democrat Party — wanted to make the act of abortion “safe, legal and rare.”
And thus, the 42nd president established the official party line: sure, it wasn’t what we want, but who are we to choose? And, after all, as long as it’s legal and regulated, it’s a safe procedure, right?
For a Bill Clinton lie, it actually manages to do better than most. He was 33 percent right: it is still legal, and the Democrats will fight to the death to keep death legal.
Rare? Hardly. Just look Planned Parenthood’s numbers, or abortion numbers anywhere else in the world.
Safe? Well, there are a number of women dying in America because of safe, legal abortions, although we’re not quite sure exactly how many because authorities at both the local and national levels don’t seem terribly interested in knowing.
However, if you want to look abroad — to another country where abortion is “safe” and “legal” — a woman in Spain is now dead after having an abortion in one of those safe and legal clinics.
According to TheLocal.es, the 32-year-old woman passed away at the clinic in Santa Cruz de Bezana, in the Cantabria region of northern Spain.
“The patient came to have a voluntary termination of her pregnancy, and everything was going well, there were no complications in surgery or with the anaesthetic,” clinic medical director Sergio Muñoz said.
“But when she was in the recovery room, she stopped breathing.”
The clinic then called an ambulance, which attempted a resuscitation. Despite briefly getting her breathing, she stopped again, and both the woman and her baby were eventually pronounced dead.
Cantabria Health Service head Julián Pérez Gil said that “health risks, as small as they are, are present in all procedures.”
Only one theory for the woman’s death was put forward — namely, that “she may have suffered a pulmonary embolism — a blockage of an artery in the lungs — when the amniotic fluid entered her circulatory system, reached the lungs, and caused a collapse that triggered cardiac failure.”
This, investigators stressed, was “only a theory.”
“The forensic report will clarify if what happened was due to the patient’s own health problem, or in fact was malpractice,” Pérez said.
Now, the more skeptical among you may ask yourselves why I’m connecting a death from an abortion in Spain to what happens here. The reason is that we actually don’t know a lot about what goes on when women die because of an abortion in the United States. That’s not an accident. While abortions might not be very rare, discussion of what happens when they go wrong almost certainly is.
In a 2017 article for The Daily Caller, Janet A. Morana, executive director of Priests for Life, noted medical examiners and the Centers for Disease Control both seem curiously uninterested in deaths from abortion.
“This is an overarching problem with abortion — we just don’t know the truth about it,” Morana wrote. “Abortion is one of the most common elective surgeries and the American public has a right to know how many women are dying, and why, from this ‘safe and legal’ procedure.”
Morana described the case of Cree Erwin-Sheppard, who died after an abortion at a Kalamazoo, Michigan Planned Parenthood. It took the county medical examiner eight months to produce a death certificate.
“Although an autopsy revealed she suffered a uterine perforation, likely during the abortion or the subsequent placement of an IUD, Ms. Erwin-Sheppard’s death has been labeled an accident and blamed on methadone,” Morana wrote. “Suspiciously — but not surprisingly — the most important parts of the death certificate have been redacted.”
What could be discovered, Morana said, came through the investigative work of pro-life activists.
“The 24-year-old factory worker, the mother of one son, had an abortion at Planned Parenthood in Kalamazoo on June 30,” Morana wrote, describing what could be pieced together. “Abortionist Laura Castleman wrote a prescription for pain pills after the abortion and IUD placement. That prescription apparently was never filled.
“Suffering from terrible abdominal pain, Ms. Erwin-Sheppard was taken to the emergency room at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital on July 2 and later released. She stayed at her mother’s house, where she was found dead on the morning of July 4.”
Morana sounded a note of weary cynicism regarding this sort of thing, saying that it “comes as no surprise to those of us in pro-life work. Abortion deaths only rarely become public knowledge.”
Not in the United States, no. That needs to change. Safe, legal and rare doesn’t cut it any more — particularly when we know most of that shopworn phrase probably isn’t true.
