Breaking: Sheriff Joe Running for Senate
A pretty big hat was just thrown into the Republican primary ring to fill the Senate seat that will soon be vacated by outgoing Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake.
That hat belongs to none other than former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who just announced that he will run for the open Senate seat in the 2018 midterm elections, according to the Washington Examiner.
The 85-year-old Arpaio is best known for his tough stance against illegal immigration, a stance which made him a target of the Obama administration and earned him a contempt of court conviction from a leftist judge, which was later pardoned by President Donald Trump.
Arpaio made the announcement on Twitter. “I am running for the U.S. Senate from the Great State of Arizona, for one unwavering reason: to support the agenda and policies of President Donald Trump in his mission to Make America Great Again,” he wrote.

The biggest competition the former sheriff will face is most likely perennial outsider Dr. Kelli Ward, as well as more mainstream Rep. Martha McSally, although others not yet named may enter the race at a later date.
“I have a lot to offer. I’m a big supporter of President Trump,” Arpaio stated in a phone interview with the Examiner. “I’m going to have to work hard; you don’t take anything for granted. But I would not being doing this if I thought that I could not win.”
“I’m not here to get my name in the paper, I get that everyday, anyway,” he added.
Alhough Arpaio has been smeared by the left as being bigoted and hateful toward immigrants, the former sheriff explained how far from the truth that portrayal really is.
“My mother and father came here from Italy, legally of course,” he stated. “I have a soft spot for the Mexican community having lived there.”
“I’m not going to get into my personal life, but I will say we have four grandkids and some have a different ethnic and racial background,” Arpaio continued. “I don’t say that. I don’t use my grandkids. So, I have a soft spot, but still, I’m going to do my job. You have to do it.”
“Being a U.S. senator is a little different than being the sheriff, because you can do a lot of things in the U.S. Senate, and I have many plans, believe me,” he added. “It’s tough. It’s a tough decision. But, if you’re going to come across that border, you should be arrested and get the consequences of it.”
As for the upcoming primary fight, Arpaio said he’s prepared for what could potentially be a hard battle with shots coming at him from both the left and the GOP establishment.
“I am outspoken. I’m looking forward to it. Let them come,” he stated. “They’ll have their political firing squads and bring tons of money here, because they don’t want to lose. I just want to do everything I can to support our president.”
Considering the friendship that has burgeoned between Arpaio and Trump, including their campaigning together in Arizona in 2016, it would be a surprise if Trump didn’t welcome this announcement from the former sheriff with gratitude that a staunch supporter is ready to join the Senate and promote the MAGA agenda from within Congress.
