Signs Posted as 'President Barack H. Obama Highway' Becomes Official

Share

Some folks stuck in holiday traffic this season will have a good reason to say “thanks, Obama.”

The 134 freeway in California is now officially christened the “President Barack H. Obama Highway,” Southern California Public Radio reported Thursday.

Signs honoring the former president will stretch from the 210 Freeway in Pasadena to State Route 2 in Glendale.

That the highway is in California probably surprises no one, as a majority of the state voted heavily Democratic in the 2016 presidential election, 61.7 percent to 31.6 percent.

Obama also spent a couple of years living in Pasadena while he attended Occidental College before transferring to Columbia University in 1981.

California Democrats were extraordinarily eager to pledge their loyalty to Obama. The tribute was introduced in a motion in December 2016 — before he had even left office, according to The Washington Examiner.

California state Sen. Anthony J. Portantino introduced the motion, which was signed into law the following September.

Do you think Obama merits having a highway named after him?

“This is an exciting day for Southern California and it showcases our deep respect and appreciation for President Obama,” Portantino said in a statement.

“It is an honor to be in a position to have helped facilitate this wonderful symbol of our collective respect for the grace and dignity embodied by our 44th President,” he continued.

The symbol of “collective respect” sits near some of the worst traffic in the U.S. The unintentional humor of it was not totally lost, however, since not everyone is obsessed with glorifying Obama at every possible chance.

“Not my highway,” one commenter joked on Facebook.

“It’s a little tricky for anyone trying to merge from the right,” another wrote, while someone else added, “Must be a dead end.”

Of course, there are those on the other side of the aisle looking forward to driving down “President Donald J. Trump Highway” one day.

Until then, we can walk by Trump Towers, Trump World Tower, AXA Financial Center in Manhattan and 555 California Street in San Francisco, the Trump Building at Wall Street, the Trump International Hotel and Tower of Chicago, Trump International Hotel of Las Vegas, Trump International Hotel and Tower of New York, Trump Park Avenue, Mar-a-Lago, or Trump International Hotel of Washington, D.C. — just some of the buildings the current president has built or bought with his own funds, not those of taxpayers.

And with over 20,000 employees, according to CNN, the Trump businesses impact real people and their families in a very personal, positive way.  How does one quantify that legacy?
