Global Warming Shills Silent As Zoo Forced to Alter Penguins' Habitat

Share

If you were to believe the global warming alarmists, by now lower Canada was supposed to be a balmy winter destination for a humanity packed into the Yukon and Nunavut.

At least, that’s the impression I got from Al Gore.

Yet, as you may have heard, Canada — and the rest of North America — is pretty darned cold at the moment. In fact, things are so bad that the Calgary Zoo is actually putting its penguins indoors.

Yes, you heard me right — penguins. According to the Globe and Mail, creatures made to survive Antarctica are now going into zoo enclosures because it’s too cold.

Zookeepers have said that if the temperature gets under -25C (-13F), the penguins are brought indoors.

Over the past few days, the average temperature has been -28C, with wind chills going down to -40C (-40F).

“We just don’t want to expose them to too much,” zoo curator Manu Celli said in a Sunday interview. “To keep them safe, we decided to pick a limit to let them out.”

The zoo has a grand total of 51 penguins from a variety of species. One species, the king penguin, lives in subarctic climates, which means it’s not necessarily able to withstand the more extreme cold that other species like the emperor penguin are.

While Celli says the penguins usually spend the winters marching about in the frigid open air, they want to err on the side of caution given that there’s a maturing chick in the flock.

“It’s not necessarily that it’s too cold for them,” Celli said.

“I believe that physiologically, they can withstand colder weather than what we have here, but these are not wild birds.”

“It’s kind of like you can bundle up your kid, but then there’s a point you’re going to say, ‘I know you’re good, but I’d rather you stay inside now,”‘ she added.

They might as well be inside, since cold temperatures mean that not a whole lot of people are wandering around the zoo grounds.

“If you are brave and you come to the zoo, you’re pretty much going to get the zoo all to yourself,” Belli said, adding that several other exhibits had seen “adjustments” because of the cold weather.

Thankfully, as I write this, the temperature in Calgary is a balmy 33F (or 1C in the units used by our poutine-eating brethren to the north). So, one assumes that the penguins are outside, the zoo might have a few more visitors, and global warming alarmists are going to be back writing how “conservatives don’t get climate change!!!” on social media.

In other words, status quo ante.
