Precious Pug with No Eyes Has Her Very Own Guide Dog

Share

Pugs are one of the most common types of small dogs. They’re the ridiculous roly polies of the dog world.

With their wrinkles and curly piggy tails, they’re a highly distinguishable breed. They look like they’ve bumped into a wall with their extreme snub noses.

The pug’s adorable skull shape also makes the breed prone to breathing and eye issues. Their eyes have been known to pop out if they run into things or experience some sort of impact.

Rosie, a pug and Cavalier King Charles spaniel mix, has experienced her share of eye problems since birth. Born with only one eye, she had the other removed a few years later because it was blocking her tear duct.

Fortunately, when she was a year and a half old, Rosie was adopted by Jadie Cooley, who would turn out to be a loving and caring dog mom.

The decision to have Rosie’s eye surgically removed was not made lightly. Cooley knew it would be best for her furry friend, though some doubted her.

Some people suggested she have the dog put down, that it would be a kinder way to deal with Rosie’s eye issues.

But Cooley refused to give up on the middle-aged pug, though she was shocked when she saw her beloved pugalier post-surgery.

“I broke down when I went to pick Rosie up after her operation,” she said. “It was such a shock seeing her with no eyes even though I knew it was coming. I was sad for her.”

The sadness didn’t last long, though, before Cooley realized that Rosie was bouncing back and adapting readily to her new state.

“But after just a day she was getting around like she normally would,” Cooley said. “She gets around the house — although we can’t really move any furniture. And she loves going on walks.”

The reason she can enjoy walks? Her closest bud, Diesel. Diesel is a 13-year-old Eurasier, a type of spitz, who is Rosie’s new set of eyes.

With the help of Diesel, Rosie (who’s now 9) can experience the world again instead of staying in the familiar confines of the house.

“She just follows around Diesel. He’s like her seeing eye dog. They’re a pair of sweet oldies. They’re a funny looking couple but they’re great together.”

Diesel isn’t always the most … aware seeing eye dog, though. Sometimes he wanders off the beaten path.

“Diesel does lead her astray sometimes and takes her off to places she shouldn’t really go,” Cooley said. “Then you see the panic on her face when she realises she’s too far away from me.”

Despite the occasional momentary panic (is friendship really friendship without that element?), we’re sure Rosie is glad for her pal Diesel, and the two make a cute couple.
