Animals Looking for Forever Homes After Shelter Left Completely Flooded

Share

As people begin to adopt pets instead of buying them from pet stores and backyard breeders, many families this year are choosing to bring a new furry member into their families as a holiday gift to everyone.

While people who impulsively get puppies as Christmas gifts are unprepared and may not have done their homework, there are plenty of people who are experienced and knowledgeable and are using the season to give a homeless pet a loving place to live.

Honor Animal Rescue of Bradenton, Florida, even offers a special service for people who have chosen to adopt a pet as a Christmas present and pass all the adoption requirements. “Elves” who work or volunteer with the rescue will be driving around Christmas morning, delivering the newly adopted pets to their forever homes.

But in the middle of preparing for Christmas and dealing with all the regular rescue business, an unexpected storm hit the shelter on Thursday and put the shelter under several inches of water.

The rescue sent out a desperate plea for help Thursday morning, and posted a video on Facebook of the soggy state of things and asking people for assistance.

“Help!!! As many of you know we are in the middle of a capital campaign to fix our drainage issues unfortunately this storm caught us by surprise and we are completely underwater if you’ve been considering adopting or would be willing to foster for a few days please come out to our ranch on Lorraine.”

“We are also desperately in need of towels!!!!”

Would you be willing to foster a dog or cat this holiday season?

To make matters worse, their computers were down. But their post was shared thousands of times, and several news outlets picked up the story, spreading the request for help.

By Thursday night, volunteers had shown up in droves to house the critters, and the shelter was able to send out a much happier post.

“What started as a cold and miserable rainy morning for the animals at our ranch ended like this for ALL of the dogs and cats at our shelter,” the shelter wrote on Facebook. “Thank you to our amazing community for helping us place them ALL in foster homes.”

“If you are fostering one of our animals, share their picture to help us find them forever homes!”

Taylor Lindsey Lewallen commented on one of the rescue’s posts, revealing just how impressive the volunteer turnout had been. “I just left the shelter all of the animal (sic) have been fostered there’s about 20 people in line now putting in applications as back up Incase any fosters are returned ❤️,” she wrote.

People have been posting lots of photos of the cats and dogs they’re fostering, becoming advocates for each of the critters who still need to find permanent homes — and based on their glowing reviews, some may end up becoming foster fails and keeping their new charges. A Christmas miracle for all involved!
