Neighbors Come Together To Host Halloween in June for 5-Year-Old Girl with Cancer
Halloween is one of those holidays that you always remember as a kid. You remember what costume you wore for each year, why you chose it and maybe even what candy you got.
Five-year-old loves Halloween. But she has also been fighting brain cancer since she was 2 years old.
On the afternoon of Saturday, June 2, a neighborhood in Indianapolis, Indiana, gathered together to hold Halloween in June for Aurelia.
After her stepfather went on Facebook and reached out, a group of Meridian Park neighbors agreed to come together for costumes, candy, and trick-or-treating.
Approximately 200 trick-or-treaters went around to 30 homes that afternoon until 6 p.m. They topped it all off with a block party called Boo Fest, where the neighborhood held a cookout.
“Honestly, I’m not surprised at the number of people who stepped up. We have high involvement in our community and so I’m not surprised, but I’m also super touched,” said Ryan Noel, a neighbor who participated in passing out candy.
As she walked from house to house, Aurelia wore a smile on her face and appeared to be enjoying herself.
Brett Edstene, Aurelia’s father, said, “She loves it, and as far as she is concerned, it’s just Halloween. And she’s had some great experiences in the last few weeks.”
To avoid melted candy from the heat, many houses passed out popsicles and drinks instead.
Edstene says he hopes to make this an annual event. He also hopes to make it a fundraiser.
There have also been numerous GoFundMe accounts created over the past several years to financially support Aurelia’s many medical procedures and requirements.
One GoFundMe in January of 2016 was created to raise support for her radiation treatment in Chicago, as well as travel expenses. The family raised $14,295 with the help of just 179 people in 29 months.
There was also a YouCaring fundraiser created in January of 2016 to fund Aurelia’s medical expenses. This fundraiser raised $10,356 by just 164 donors.
It is clear to see that has a lot of love and support coming from the entire community and beyond to lift her up in her battle against brain cancer.
It is so inspiring to see a community work together to create an uplifting environment for this little girl.
