Meet the Newest Member of the Royal Family: A Rescue Beagle Named 'Guy'

Share

Do you love dogs? Then you understand why everyone thinks the Rover in their life is pure royalty.

But in reality, a startling number of furry friends live lives that are far from fame and fortune. The ASPCA estimates that every year, roughly 6.5 million companion animals find their way into our country’s animal shelters.

It’s a tough number to comprehend. What’s even worse is realizing that an estimated 670,000 unwanted shelter dogs are put down annually.

Maybe that’s why one “wags to riches” story is warming the hearts of humans around the world. And the best part is, the canine in question is truly just an average guy … or more properly, an average Guy.

Have you met Guy the rescue beagle? If you witnessed the recent royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, maybe you spotted him on his way to Windsor Castle.

Eagle-eyed observers claim that Guy was the one chilling in the hunter green Range Rover, checking out that colossal throng of cheering admirers. That would have made his traveling companion, you know, Queen Elizabeth II.

But whether or not the winsome pup actually enjoyed such a regal ride, life wasn’t always so stately for Guy. He was first discovered at the age of 3, utterly alone and wandering through the woods.

The forlorn pooch was transported to a high-kill Kentucky animal shelter, where nobody came to claim him as the clock wound down. Just before he was euthanized, however, A Dog’s Dream Rescue jumped in to save the day.

This non-profit, Canada-based organization is focused on rescuing abandoned beagles across Ohio and Kentucky. Guy was whisked to safety — and the next thing he knew, he was hanging out at an Ontario pet store’s adoption event.

That’s where Markle originally fell in love with him back in 2015. She was, at that time, residing in Ontario while filming her USA Network drama “Suits.”

From there, it wasn’t long before Guy was being featured front-and-center on the celebrity’s social media accounts, co-starring with her rescued shepherd mix Bogart. And after a bit more time went by, Markle eventually fell in love with a handsome, red-headed royal.

The rest, as they say, is Kensington Palace history. Flash forward to 2018, and Guy is now happily sitting and staying for the Duchess of Sussex herself.
