Marine Soldier in Mother's Arms for 1st Time in Four Years with Help from Police
Surprise visits tend to be the best kind. Don’t get me wrong, looking forward to expected get-togethers is fun, too.
But there’s just something about seeing the smiling face of a family member or loved one when you least suspect it.
Especially when that loved one has been away for quite some time. This is commonplace for those who serve in the military, of course.
The brave men and women of the United States Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, and Navy spend lengths of time away from home so we don’t have to.
As we remember the heroes who braved the day during the 9/11 attacks in 2001, it’s always heartwarming to witness how present-day heroes are still fighting for our rights and our freedoms.

Angel Santiago hasn’t been home to see his family in Maine for four years. A year is too long for me, but four? I can’t even imagine!
As with many military reunion videos, Santiago sought some local assistance to help him surprise his mom, Perez Mayda, on Sept. 3.
According to News Center Maine, Santiago hid inside a police cruiser while an officer approached his mom’s home in Portland, Maine.
Mayda couldn’t comprehend why police were showing up at her door. But when Santiago stepped out of the cruiser everything slid into focus.
Watch as the mother and son reunite for the first time in four years. The video begins with Santiago filming from his hiding spot in the back of the cruiser.
This sweet moment will melt your heart and proves that our babies are always our babies, no matter how old they get. Mayda clearly feels this way as she hugs her son.
Santiago is grateful to News Center Maine and the Portland Maine Police Department for their support in surprising his mama.
“I was confused when the whole thing was happening, but the joy took over after I saw my son,” Mayda told News Center Maine.
What a great way to spend the holiday. No doubt this family will cherish this memory for years to come. Welcome home, Angel Santiago!
