Mother Makes Doll with 'Jesus Mark' on Face So Daughter Can Have One Just Like Her
What appears to be flaws or mistakes to some are usually the most beautiful things in this life. A drawing made with love by a child for his mother, for example, is a priceless treasure despite the coloring outside the lines.
Marks, scars, bumps, bruises — all tell a story. Whether the stains are inside or outside, these are the very “blemishes” that make up who we are.
A blemish is defined by Merriam-Webster’s as “a noticeable imperfection.” Personally, I think the dictionary needs to rework the definition.
Because, truthfully, there is nothing quite so perfect as a genuinely unique human being created by the One who makes no mistakes.
One family from Chambers County, Alabama, has embraced this truth in the most incredible way. Like any family of five, the Hursts have had their fair share of challenges.
One challenge has presented itself in the form of their 5-year-old daughter Mattie’s unique facial birthmark. Known as a port-wine stain, the rare mark affects about 3 of every 1,000 people, according to WRBL.
The family has lovingly named Mattie’s mark her “Jesus Mark.” The challenge they have is not with the mark itself, but rather with finding dolls that look like this precious girl.
Mattie’s younger brother, Sam, and sister, Kyleigh, can often be found drawing a “Jesus Mark” on their faces with their mom’s lipstick.
Mattie also loves to color. Since she hasn’t found a doll with a face like hers, she’s often made her own, drawing on her toys to make them look the same.
“To you they may look like just colored on toys that I should dump. But they’re so much more,” Katie Hurst wrote on Facebook prior to Christmas 2018.
“I need Christmas to hurry and get here. Because maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store, maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”
A little bit more turned out to be a whole lot more when sweet Mattie found the best gift of all on Christmas Day. A gift her mother put so much heart into. A gift she’ll undoubtedly cherish forever.
On that most special morning, Mattie saw something she never expected. A doll with a “Jesus Mark” just like hers.
Hurst had searched everywhere for a custom doll with a port-wine stain. “American Girl doesn’t make them. Nor do the off brands,” she wrote.
But that didn’t stop this determined mom from “working her Christmas magic.” With a little red lipstick and clear nail polish, she was able to make Mattie’s dream of having a doll look just like her come true.
“I took what I learned from her and applied it to the doll,” Hurst told WRBL.
Isn’t this the sweetest, most beautiful sight you’ve ever seen? The family’s faith and love for one another are truly inspiring.
To the world, Mattie’s mark may be a “blemish,” but to anyone who truly cares to look, I think they’d find the most perfect face in the world, a face designed by the Creator Himself. And that’s what Christmas is really all about.
