Watch Stranger Give Homeless Veteran Brand New Shoes Right Off His Feet
Some videos are purely for entertainment purposes, while others provide much more than a good laugh or cry.
Certain moments captured on camera can even offer quite the humbling experience, reminding us of how much we truly have to be grateful for.
For example, I own at least 10 pairs of shoes. Dress shoes, tennis shoes, flip flops, sandals, boots … I have a pair for any and every occasion.
But some people don’t have the luxury of choosing their shoes or clothing based on the events of the day. In fact, sadly, there are too many homeless who don’t even have a single pair to their name.
A video uploaded to YouTube by All Urban Central in 2015 shows just how little some people have. The footage was originally captured on Veteran’s Day.
The men and women who protect and serve our country often struggle when they return to civilian life. Sarge’s story reflects this struggle.
When “Sarge” walked toward Jesse’s car, the young man knew he needed to reach out to the veteran. Sarge wasn’t wearing shoes, and Jesse had a new pair of white Adidas sneakers on his feet.
“You don’t have no shoes, man?” Jesse asks. The shoeless veteran explains that his old pair had worn out, doing more harm than good by giving him blisters.
What happens next is truly amazing. Watch as Jesse gets out of his car and doesn’t hesitate to give Sarge the break he needs.
The two men share a conversation for several minutes. Jesse says that Sarge needs the shoes more than he does after hearing about the struggles the veteran has had getting help.
“Feels like putting clouds on my feet…” a grateful Sarge says. “…God bless you.” Their encounter has gone viral over the years. This particular upload has more than 4 million views as of Thursday morning.
The video’s description provides a link to a GoFundMe campaign that Jesse created for Sarge. He wanted to help Sarge beyond a single pair of new shoes.
“I decided to start this campaign to help Sarge get a fresh start,” the campaign description reads. “I know where he resides and would love to present him with funding and the opportunity to live well in the country he so proudly served for.”
So far, the campaign has raised $1,000 as of Thursday morning, but there are many ways we can reach out to the homeless in our communities.
A new pair of shoes or a hot meal can go a long way for someone who has nothing. Serving at a shelter or soup kitchen provide good opportunities, too.
However you choose to pitch in, let’s not forget the brave people who fought to protect our country. It’s because of men like Sarge that we have freedom and security.
