NFL Owner Reveals That His Cancer Has Returned

Share

Paul Allen, the owner of the Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trail Blazers, announced Monday that his cancer has returned.

Allen, 65, who made his fortune as the co-founder of Microsoft, said the non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that he was treated for in 2009 has returned.

“My team of doctors has begun treatment of the disease and I plan on fighting this aggressively,” Allen said in a statement posted on his website.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma forms in the bloodstream or lymph system. More than 70,000 cases are diagnosed every year.

“A lot has happened in medicine since I overcame this disease in 2009,” Allen said. “My doctors are optimistic that I will see good results from the latest therapies, as am I.”

He said he will stay involved with his various philanthropic and business ventures while he is undergoing treatment.

“I will continue to stay involved with Vulcan, the Allen Institutes, the Seahawks and Trail Blazers, as I have in the past. I have confidence in the leadership teams to manage their ongoing operations during my treatment,” he said.

Allen has owned the Blazers since 1988 and the Seahawks since 1996. The Blazers have made the playoffs 19 times in his tenure and made the NBA Finals twice, in 1990 and 1992.

The Seahawks have been to the Super Bowl three times under Allen, winning Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 over the Broncos, 43-8.

“I am very grateful for the support I’ve received from my family and friends. And I’ve appreciated the support of everyone on the teams and in the broader community in the past, and count on that support now as I fight this challenge,” Allen added.

“Go Seahawks! Go Blazers!” said Allen.

Allen co-founded Microsoft in 1975 with Bill Gates. He left the company in 1983 after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, a similar form of cancer. He remained on the board of directors until 2000.

Allen is the 44th-richest person in the world with a net worth of $21.7 billion, according to Forbes.

“He battled like a real warrior last time. He made it through it,” said Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, reported the Seattle News Tribune.

“The signals are that there will be a real positive outcome. We’re all pulling for him, too. We are grateful for all that he stands for in this community, and for all of us. We’re going to join together and battle along with him through this process he’s going through that he knows very well. We’re thinking only good thoughts,” Carroll added.
