NHL Standoff Between Ex-Captain and Team Gets Ugly: 'Suspend Without Pay. Do Not Give In.'

Things are getting ugly in Hockeytown, and the Detroit Red Wings appear to have reached their breaking point with their former captain.

The Red Wings announced Thursday that they have suspended star forward Dylan Larkin without pay after he informed the organization that he would no longer play for the team, ESPN reported.

The announcement marks a dramatic escalation in a standoff between Detroit and one of its most recognizable players.

In a statement posted to social media, Red Wings interim general manager Shawn Horcoff made it abundantly clear that the organization was unhappy with Larkin’s decision.

“Dylan Larkin has informed us that he will no longer play for the Detroit Red Wings,” Horcoff said. “We are disappointed by his decision, particularly given his obligations to the organization and his teammates. We have therefore suspended Dylan without pay.”

But while the suspension is certainly noteworthy, Horcoff’s comments about Larkin’s future suggested that Detroit has no intention of being pushed into a deal it doesn’t like.

“We will continue to explore trade opportunities involving Dylan,” Horcoff said. “In addition to needing his approval, any trade must also be in the best interests of the Detroit Red Wings and support the organization’s long-term goals.”

That’s quite the predicament for both sides, and a complicated one due to Larkin’s no-trade clause in his deal, which pays $8.7 million annually.

Larkin apparently wants out badly enough that he’s willing to stop playing altogether. Detroit, meanwhile, has made it clear that it won’t simply accommodate that desire at any cost.

And the Red Wings’ front office isn’t the only party that seems frustrated with the situation.

One fan responding to the team’s official announcement offered a particularly uncompromising suggestion: “Absolutely NO trade. Suspend without pay. Do not give in.”

It’s a sentiment that underscores just how contentious the dispute has become, particularly when a player once entrusted with wearing the captain’s “C” is now refusing to take the ice for the organization.

(His captaincy was stripped as the standoff intensified.)

Larkin felt that the organization was taking too long to act on his June trade request.

For Detroit, the challenge is finding a resolution that doesn’t undermine its own interests, while also having Larkin’s approval due to the no-trade clause. ESPN reported that Larkin has expanded his list of possible destination teams to 10.

Of course, keeping a suspended player around indefinitely isn’t exactly an ideal outcome, either.

Horcoff closed his statement by thanking Detroit’s coaches and players for maintaining their focus and remaining committed to competing every day.

That final message seemed especially pointed given the circumstances, even if Horcoff didn’t explicitly single out Larkin again.

Whatever happens next, the relationship between Larkin and the Red Wings appears to have deteriorated well beyond an ordinary trade request.

And with Detroit publicly drawing a line in the sand, it remains to be seen which side will blink first.
