Oklahoma Walk-On Impressed School So Much He Was Offered Scholarship

Share

Lee Morris, a junior wide receiver for the University of Oklahoma, entered the college football season as a walk-on. But after just one game, Morris has a scholarship, which he earned by his play on the field.

Morris had a breakout performance in the Sooners’ 63-14 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday — catching a 65-yard touchdown pass and blocking a punt.

On the blocked punt, Morris rushed straight up the middle to smother punter Sebastien Riella. Oklahoma’s Curtis Bolton recovered to give the Sooners a 14-0 lead with 7:12 left in the first quarter.

Then, a few minutes later, Morris got it done on offense. He turned a reception over the middle into six points with a spectacular run after the catch that resulted in a 65-yard touchdown.

They were the two biggest plays of the game.

Will Oklahoma get back to the College Football Playoffs?
At the post-game press conference, Sooners coach Lincoln Riley was asked if he was going to give Morris a scholarship after his performance.

“I’m gonna have to. I’m gonna not have to — I’m gonna give it to him at some point,” Riley said, reported USA Today.

Well, he did — and he didn’t waste any time doing it.

At the team’s first practice after the game, Riley told his team: “If you guys go out to dinner tonight, take Lee Morris because he’s got a scholarship.”

The entire team mobbed Morris to congratulate him.

Coming into Saturday’s game, Morris, a redshirt junior, had only played in two games. In those two games he had two catches — and two touchdowns.

“It’s been a dream of mine since I was kid. And now I can proudly say, that I’m playing football at The University of Oklahoma on FULL Scholarship!” tweeted Morris.

Look for Morris to be a productive player for the seventh-ranked Sooners this year. He already has chemistry with his quarterback, Kyler Murray, who went to high school with Morris in Texas.

“I feel like he’s a lucky charm for me,” Murray said. “I mean, last year, I threw a touchdown to him as well. He actually made me look good after I just put it on his face, and then he caught it and did the rest.”
