In October of 1993, River Phoenix suffered an overdose from morphine and cocaine while performing at a nightclub. He collapsed outside of the club, paramedics attempted to resuscitate him but pronounced him dead at the scene.
He was in the middle of shooting Dark Blood, and there were a handful of important scenes that still needed to be filmed that included his character. Because of that, the film was abandoned, until it was shown at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2012. Director George Sluzier had kept the footage for all of those years, then pieced together scenes to create a final product.
