The Texas Longhorns’ 2018 football season was a return to prominence for the storied program as the team went 10-4 its best record since 2009.
Leading the way was Austin-born and Austin-raised quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who attended Westlake High School in the city — a school that also produced Drew Brees and Nick Foles.
It seems as though Ehlinger will be following in the footsteps of those players to the NFL, as his sophomore season was one of the greatest in recent memory.
He became just the eighth player since 2000 to have at least 25 passing touchdowns and 15 rushing touchdowns in the same season. Others on that list include Heisman winners Marcus Mariota, Lamar Jackson, Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton and Tim Tebow, per Sports-Reference.com.
But an all-time great quarterback from a previous era isn’t that impressed with Ehlinger’s season or his ability to play the position.
While speaking at his alma mater, Louisiana Tech — which opens its season Aug. 31 against the Longhorns — “Fox NFL Sunday” host Terry Bradshaw said Ehlinger “ain’t that good.”
Terry Bradshaw, shots fired.
On Texas QB Sam Ehlinger:
“He ain’t that good.”

“I never understood why players would want to go and stack up, like Texas. We open up with Texas this year,” Bradshaw said. “One year, they signed three 5A quarterbacks. Two are now gone, and one is playing [Ehlinger], and he ain’t that good.
“I’m like, ‘Really, 5A?’ You watch ’em throw the football and you go, ‘It’s like they go there and they can’t throw the football.’ I’ll take our boys any day.”
Bradshaw apparently meant 5-star when he said 5A, and he also may have his years a little off: Ehlinger was the only quarterback that Texas signed in the Class of 2017, but the school did sign others in the year before and the year after.
Former starter Shane Buechele was in the Class of 2016 and was benched in favor of Ehlinger. After losing his job, he announced in February that he’ll be transferring to SMU, per ESPN.
Cameron Rising was in the Class of 2018 and redshirted behind Ehlinger and Buechele last season. He too decided to transfer earlier this year and headed to Utah, per 247 Sports.
This marks the second time in nine days that a quarterback has taken a shot at Ehlinger; the first was former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield.
The current Cleveland Brown decided to stoke the flames in the Red River Rivalry last week by digging up Ehlinger’s high school record and his lack of success against Mayfield’s high school.
Mayfield is also an Austin QB: He attended Lake Travis High School, a rival of Westlake High. Despite finishing as his school’s all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns, Ehlinger and Westlake went 0-3 against Lake Travis which Mayfield brought up.
“He couldn’t beat Lake Travis, so I don’t really care [about] his opinion on winning,” Mayfield said on KREF-AM in Norman, Oklahoma. “Westlake is a great program, but the two best quarterbacks to come out of there are Drew Brees and Nick Foles. Sam can stay down there in Texas.”
“That will stir the pot,” he added. “He doesn’t like me, and I hope he knows I don’t like him, either.”
So Mayfield doesn’t like Ehlinger and Bradshaw doesn’t think he’s that good. That should give him a little extra motivation heading into in the 2019 season.
