MLB Ace Ties 108-Year-Old Pitching Record Despite Being Just 8-8

Share

New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom is having an all-time great year, but you wouldn’t know it by his record.

Pitching for one of the worst teams in the National League, deGrom is just 8-8, but that’s because of the Mets’ anemic offense.

In fact, deGrom is having a record-shattering year on the mound with a streak of 25, and counting, starts giving up less than three runs.

With his 25th consecutive start in a single season giving up less than three runs, broke the team record set by Dwight Gooden in 1985.

The last pitcher to do what deGrom has done was King Cole, who did it in 1910. Cole went 20-4 that year for the Cubs with a 1.80 ERA.

DeGrom also has a streak of consecutive quality starts going. Quality starts are those where the pitcher goes at least six innings and gives up three or fewer runs.

The Mets ace has made 20 straight quality starts this season, which is the longest steak in team history, breaking the previous mark set by Tom Seaver. It is also the longest current streak in the majors.

Should deGrom win the Cy Young?

The record for consecutive quality starts was set by St. Louis Cardinals legend Bob Gibson, who had 26 straight quality starts, but he did it over the course of two seasons — from September 1967 to July 1968.

On the season, deGrom has a ridiculous 1.68 ERA, which leads the majors. He’s also fourth in strikeouts with 230.

“Any time you’re mentioned with players like that, it’s nice to hear,” deGrom said, reported MLB.com. “It’s an honor. We love playing this game, and that’s just how I take the mound. I just want to go out there and give it my best and put this team in a position to win.”

Monday against the Dodgers was a microcosm of deGrom’s season. He pitched another brilliant game, but didn’t get the win. The Mets did pull out a 4-2 victory over the Dodgers on a three-run homer by Brandon Nimmo in the top of the ninth, but it came too late for deGrom to get the win.

Can he win the Cy Young with so few wins? That remains to be seen, but Mets manager Mickey Callaway has no doubts about who is the best.

“He’s been the best pitcher in all of baseball,” Callaway said, reported MLB.com. “It’s grit and determination. He just won’t be beaten.”
