Pro-Trump UFC champ: Eagles and Warriors are 'a complete joke, a bunch of losers'

Share

When the sports world last saw UFC welterweight Colby “Chaos” Covington, he was winning the interim welterweight title in fairly dominant fashion over rival Rafael dos Anjos.

Covington is an accomplished fighter, so it wasn’t surprising that he won the interim championship via decision (welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is currently injured and unable to defend the title).

What was surprising, however, were Covington’s comments immediately following his win over dos Anjos at UFC 225.

“I’m going to do what a real American should do. I’m bringing this belt to the White House and I’m putting it on Donald Trump’s desk,” Covington told Joe Rogan in the immediate aftermath of his win.

Covington was clearly referring to the NBA-champion Golden State Warriors and NFL-champion Philadelphia Eagles.

The Warriors are chock full of vocal Trump critics, so it was no surprise that they publicized their intention not to visit the White House for the traditional sports champion’s visit. The team also skipped out on a White House visit last year.

The Eagles, meanwhile, had a plan in place to visit the White House, but were disinvited at the last minute when it became apparent that swathes of the Eagles organization wouldn’t attend. Reports suggested that nearly all of the black players on the Eagles planned on boycotting the visit.

Covington is very obviously not a fan of the Eagles and Warriors, and elaborated on that in an interview via MMAWeekly.

“What a disgrace, the the Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia Eagles are. They’re a complete joke, a bunch of losers,” Covington told the interviewer.

Covington didn’t stop there, ripping apart anthem protesters as well as the spoiled attitudes that can pervade professional sports.

“How dare you not kneel for the national anthem, how dare you not accept President Trump’s offer to the office?” Covington said. “There’s  men and women losing their lives, sweating blood and tears … so you can eat off silver spoons and have your little Bentleys.”

Covington proceeded to dare pro athletes to play in another country, one that doesn’t offer the unbridled freedom and exposure that American professional sports offer. He then issued an open challenge for any of them to fight him.

“These silver spoon athletes they think they’re so tough. They act tough to Trump. Come act tough to me, I’m over at Coconut Creek (Florida) at America’s Top Team,” Covington said. “Come see me you little pencil neck geek Kevin Durant, you pencil neck little b—- Steph Curry.”

And just in case there was any doubt about how much Covington loves the current presidential administration, he reiterated just how much he likes “winning” and how much he’s looking forward to a potential White House visit.

“I’m very excited man, I’m addicted to winning just like Trump. I’m here to make UFC great again, he’s making America and the whole world great again, so I’m very happy to meet Donald Trump,” Covington said.

Of note, UFC president Dana White also spoke at a press conference about the potential of arranging a White House visit for UFC champions. Traditionally, UFC champions have not visited the White House, but that seems poised to change.
