Will Smith Says He Has Everything but Admits Helping Others Is His Only True Happiness

Share

We all have down days, some of us more than others. Days when nothing seems to go right, or problems we’ve been carrying for a long time finally crush us.

It’s kind of odd and paradoxical to think that helping others might help you, but it’s true.

If you’ve ever gotten to a place where you’re consumed with your own problems, concerns and struggles, sometimes the most freeing thing you can do is to help someone else.

By walking in another person’s shoes, you begin to realize that we all have our individual issues, but perhaps what your friend is not equipped to handle, you are — or vice versa.

When you see how much struggle is out there in the world, your own problems start to take a back seat. Instead of focusing on what you can’t do, you focus on what you can do and how you can improve other people’s lives.

So many people search for happiness in this life and generally turn to things that cannot give lasting joy.

Even Will Smith knows this. He’s created videos in the past to highlight cultural misconceptions about happiness and love.

He’s reiterated how he finds his happiness, though — as well as how he hasn’t. Smith is a household name and has amassed quite a fortune, but those aren’t the things that make him happy.

“I’ve been to the top of money… I’ve had all of the adoration,” he said. “I’ve been to the top of all those material world mountains and nothing makes you happy other than being useful to others.”

“That’s it. That’s the only thing that ever will satisfy that thing, is that what you’re doing is useful.”

Smith believes that it’s our duty to better the world and the lives of the people around us.

“You know it’s an idea that my grandmother always had, that if you’re gonna be here, then there’s a necessity to make a difference,” he said in an interview. “She always instilled the spiritual responsibility that you have to make every group you come into contact with better.”

“I want to do good. I want the world to be better because I was here. I want my life, I want my work, my family, I want it to mean something.”

“It’s like if you are not making someone else’s life better, then you’re wasting your time. Your life will become better by making other lives better.”

This self-sacrificial view is one that also dominates many Christian circles. Serving others and being God’s hands is a crucial part of loving your neighbor, regardless of who they are.

It’s kind of a nice bonus that you also benefit from being kind, even though the reward of happiness shouldn’t be the focus — it really does make the world a better place. So take a cue from Smith, and find a way to make someone’s life just a little nicer today!
