Alabama safety rips Dabo Swinney after convincing Sugar Bowl win

Share

Alabama safety Tony Brown was fired up after the team’s College Football Playoff semifinal victory over the Clemson Tigers on Monday night.

“They weren’t ready for us,” Brown shouted after the Crimson Tide’s 24-6 victory in the Sugar Bowl.

In an intense postgame interview, the senior defensive back said he and his teammates were motivated by the actions of Clemson, which beat the Tide 35-31 in last year’s national championship game.

“Last year, after the national championship game, the players, [Tigers wide receiver] Hunter Refrow, he lied something about hitting me up,” the senior safety said. “That was a lie. But I thank him and I thank Dabo Swinney for all the ammunition they gave this team to come get right in this game, in this playoff. I thank you for the ammunition they gave us. I thank you. I appreciate you.”

He was referring to Renfrow’s statement that he had apologized to Brown for trash talking in last season’s national championship game.

Brown then took off his shirt and tried to plant the Alabama flag into the Superdome turf (it fell over).

An animated Brown continued to rail against Renfrow and Swinney in the locker room.

“The lie Hunter Renfrow told the media about trying to hit me up,” he told AL.com. “I didn’t read the whole story but from what I heard he said, we were talking trash during the game and he felt bad about what happened during the game and he tried to contact me and it didn’t happen. That didn’t happen at all.”

What Brown called a “lie” might just be a misunderstanding on his part. Renfrow had said he apologized during last year’s national championship game, while Brown seemed to be referring to an apology after the game.

He then turned his attention to Swinney.

“I love Dabo for all the ammunition he gave this team, man,” Brown continued. “Told us we weren’t ready, told us we weren’t worthy of [being] a top-four team. Look, that’s what happens when you talk trash to us. We’re going to show you.”

That was a reference to Swinney’s comments at the joint press conferences that the four playoff coaches did in Atlanta in early December.

Swinney was asked to explain why he voted for Ohio State instead of Alabama, while sitting next to Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban.

“Just coming home,” the coach said, “literally, at 3 o’clock in the morning. ‘Man, I got to do this poll.’ Looking at it, you know, they won 11 games. Alabama won 11 games. [Ohio State] won the Big Ten championship. Obviously, the committee has a lot of things to look at, a lot of data. They’re going to pick the four best teams, however they see it. At that moment, that’s the way I voted. They’re all great teams, man.”

Swinney said it was “a moment of insanity. Complete insanity.”

Brown finished Monday night’s game with one tackle and also broke up a third-down pass attempt in the Tide’s convincing Sugar Bowl win.

Alabama will take on the SEC rival Georgia Bulldogs for the College Football Playoff national championship on Monday.
