Breaking: UK Court Convicts Russell Brand of Rape, Star is Headed to Prison
A British jury convicted actor, comedian, and podcaster Russell Brand on one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday.
The British jury also found him not guilty of “two rape counts and one count of attempted indecent assault,” according to the Associated Press.
Judge Joel Bennathan immediately remanded him into custody because of the possibility he might flee, the Associated Press confirmed.
“I regret the hardship caused to the children, of course,” Bennathan said after the verdict, referencing Brand’s three young kids. “But the hardship has been caused by serious criminal offending by their father.”

Bennathan also warned that the politically outspoken actor would face a “significant” prison sentence upon his upcoming Monday sentencing.
“A rape conviction can carry a sentence of life in prison in the UK,” according to Deadline.
Brand appeared unfazed by the otherwise shocking verdict and aftermath.
“When bail was denied, he gestured to his lawyers that he was OK and repeatedly said, ‘I’m good, I’m good, I’m good,’ before being taken away,” the Associated Press reported.
Brand had faced a tough trial during which prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones reportedly portrayed him as a ruthless and manipulative “sexual predator.”
The criticism of him continued even after the trial’s conclusion.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of London’s Metropolitan Police said the conviction was “a testament to the extraordinary courage, resilience and determination of the women who came forward and reported what happened to them,” according to the Associated Press.
“Brand used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women,” Furphy added. “As his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement.”
The trial lasted four weeks, while deliberations among the jury of eight men and four women lasted only two days.
The actor staunchly maintained his innocence throughout the whole process. He at one point testified that he’d been a sex-obsessed young man who’d led a promiscuous lifestyle, but said that he’d never forced himself on anyone.
During previous remarks made to podcaster Megyn Kelly, Brand described himself as a former “hedonist,” “fool,” and “exploiter of women.”
Russell Brand has openly described himself as a “hedonist, a fool and an exploiter of women” in an interview with Megyn Kelly.
With seven sexual offense charges currently before a jury, his comments about fame, addiction and his past behavior have attracted renewed attention.
Speaking during the interview, Brand said:
“What fame gave me, and what addiction fueled, was opportunity for endless consent, which led me to be a hedonist and a fool and an exploiter of women.”…

All of the verdicts against Brand were based on allegations made from 2004 to 2009.
“Brand, 51, was convicted of raping the 21-year-old admirer in 2009 after they met at one of his shows in west London,” according to CNN.
“He was also found guilty of groping an MTV worker at a bar in central London in 2004, kissing and groping another woman at her workplace in 2005 and sexually assaulting another woman in 2009 when she was forced to give him a massage,” the network reported.
