Check Out These 15 Forgotten Benefits of Shooting

Share

The Second Amendment is both a fundamental and natural right to keep and bear arms to defend ourselves and our loved ones from danger. The prevalence of firearms in the hands of Americans also serves as a bulwark against invasion from foreign enemies and the rise of domestic governmental tyranny.

But there is so much more in the way of benefits that come with owning and shooting firearms, as was recently touched on in a concise list compiled by Josh Montgomery at the Minute Man Review. The Minute Man Review website is focused on firearms, weapons, ammunition and all of the additional gear that goes along with those things, such as cases, holsters, slings, bipods, scopes and other accessories.

First and foremost, shooting firearms is beneficial to focus and eyesight, in that to accurately hit a target, you must mentally clear out everything else to focus directly on the target. That intense focus can also help deal with eye strain and will improve hand/eye coordination.

Firing a gun also tends to make you a more responsible person, as the inherent danger of the deadly weapon must always be countenanced — indeed, the person pulling the trigger is liable and responsible for wherever that bullet goes and whatever it ultimately hits.

Shooting guns can also help a person build up their courage and make them more confident overall. Proper training with a firearm can lead a person to trust more in their own abilities, which can lead to being more assertive, confident and courageous in other non-shooting aspects of life.

Additionally, the confidence and courage gained from training to properly shoot firearms can lead you to better manage the occasional — sometimes near-constant — chaos in your life.

Another benefit of shooting is that it helps you become more disciplined in life. Furthermore, it helps teach the importance of establishing and following basic rules, which is just as important in life as it is on a potentially dangerous gun range with potentially deadly weapons all around.

As an aside, now is as good a time as any to remind everyone of the fundamental rules of shooting, namely: Treat every gun as if it is loaded, never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy, never place your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot, and always remain aware of what is behind and around your target.

Training to properly shoot guns can be physically beneficial as well. Repeatedly standing and holding yourself in a particular position while shooting can strengthen your core, build up muscles and muscle memories and even improve overall balance.

Do you agree there are a number of additional benefits to shooting firearms?

Along those lines, shooting firearms at the gun range can be viewed as a sort of body-building workout, one that can fill you up with adrenaline and all of the other beneficial bodily chemicals and hormones typically gained from a workout, like endorphins.

Likewise, shooting can also be beneficial in that it serves as a stress reliever and helps you relax, usually by way of mentally focusing on the task at hand — accurately hitting the target — instead of thinking about how the day went, things left to be done or other daily concerns and worries.

Time spent at the gun range can help build relationships and draw disparate members of a community together around a common interest, shooting guns, which is both a personal and societal benefit.

And then there is the economic benefit, though that benefit is largely gained by society through the purchase — and, alas, taxation — of firearms, ammunition and the gear that goes along with those.

While it may not be so economically beneficial on the personal level — guns, ammo and gear can be an expensive habit — there is no denying the economic impact of our nation’s flourishing firearms industry, which altogether pumps millions, if not billions, into our nation’s overall economy.

Not mentioned on that list put together by the Minute Man Review are a couple of other potential benefits. These include a sense of national pride in knowing you are mentally and physically ready to defend the country, if necessary, not to mention the sense of preparedness that comes with knowing that, should you be the targeted victim of a crime, or society begins to significantly crumble, you are prepared and trained to take decisive action to defend your life and family.

Shooting guns is fun, no doubt, but there is so much more to it than just relaxing while plinking targets. Shooting firearms provides a whole host of mental and physical benefits that simply can’t be dismissed or taken for granted. So, get out there on the gun range and make yourself a better person overall while you make yourself a better shooter.
