Creepy: Congressman Voted to Keep Obamacare Just to Impress a Girl

A series of scandals has rocked Washington after it was revealed that numerous congressmen used taxpayer money to settle sexual harassment lawsuits with female staff members.
One of those is Representative Pat Meehan, a Republican from Pennsylvania. All of the politicians who have now been exposed for secretly paying off sexual harassment claimants are predictably slimy, but Meehan might win the prize for Most Pathetic.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, the 62-year-old congressman — who is married with children — is accused of pursuing an inappropriate relationship with a former staff member decades younger than him (although, to be clear, the young woman did not reciprocate).
Meehan admits that he expressed romantic feelings to the woman, and that he lashed out at her after she didn’t return his affection and instead began dating another man much closer to her own age.
In the strangest twist, a childish-looking “love note” written by the congressman has now been released, and it strongly suggests that Meehan voted “No” on the proposal to repeal Obamacare in order to impress the anonymous woman.

“Rep. Meehan voted against the GOP bill to repeal Obamacare partly to try to please a female aide he saw as his soulmate, per sources,” summarized Kenneth P. Vogel of the New York Times.
“He wrote to her that, on the day of the vote, ‘I had to say ‘no’ to the president and to the Speaker of the House, and got to say ‘yes’ to you,’” the reporter continued, quoting Meehan’s hand-written letter.
It’s hard to know precisely what the rambling love note was meant to say, but it certainly looks like the congressman is trying to use his vote on Obamacare to sway the feelings of the young woman.
Other parts of the romantic letter can only be described as creepy.
“As you bask in this moment of extreme joy I want to share with you my sentiment of how richly it is deserved. You are kind and sensitive and caring and infectious with your laugh. You are and have been a complete partner to me and you have brought me much happiness,” Meehan’s note declared.
According to the Inquirer, Rep. Meehan felt “invited” to express his attraction to the unnamed female aide because they once shared ice cream after work.
It looks like the people of Pennsylvania won’t have to go through the effort of voting the congressman out of office. After initially declaring that he was still running for re-election, Meehan finally conceded that he would step down after the conclusion of the current term.
To be clear, the only people that know exactly what happened behind closed doors are Pat Meehan and the young woman who is caught up in the scandal.
However, there seems to be no denying that the congressman created an inappropriate and uncomfortable situation — one that impacted his ability to serve the American people.
At the end of the day, that’s the big problem: Meehan and others like him are betraying the trust of the citizens they’re supposed to represent. No wonder voters from both parties are fed up with Congress.
