Dem Congressional Candidate Sends Leftists into Complete Frenzy by Simply Raising Her Hand
The New York Times on Saturday published a curious little piece about the state of the Democrats in 2018: “There Is a Revolution on the Left. Democrats Are Bracing,” it declared.
It noted candidates like avowed socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York and Abdul El-Sayed, the Democrat Michigan gubernatorial candidate who supports single-payer health care.
“Energized to take on President Trump, these voters are also seeking to remake their own party as a ferocious — and ferociously liberal — opposition force. And many appear as focused on forcing progressive policies into the midterm debate as they are on defeating Republicans,” Alexander Burns reported for The Times.
Burns noted that “voters who make up the ascending coalition on the left have had an outsize effect on the national political conversation, driving the Democrats’ internal policy debates and putting pressure on party leaders unseen in previous campaigns.”
The piece didn’t exactly take a position on whether these lefitst insurgents were good or bad for America. However, if The Times wanted a gauge of that, it should have sent a reporter to the state of Arizona.
Given that the current holder of the 2nd Congressional District, Republican Rep. Martha McSally, is leaving the seat to run for Jeff Flake’s open Senate seat, the Cook Political Report has it as leaning toward the Democrats. In fact, Cook says that “Democrats are hoping for a scenario in which McSally loses the GOP Senate nomination to a more conservative candidate and moderate Republicans abandon the ticket altogether, allowing Democrats to waltz into this middle-of-the-road seat.”
So, what does the Democrat base in a middle-of-the-road district look like? Well, just ask Ann Kirkpatrick. According to the Washington Free Beacon, she was the only person on stage for the debate Thursday who raised her hand “yes” for both questions.
The first was whether anyone “would have declared (their) support for ICE agents without any increased oversight.” The second was whether she would have disowned Rep. Waters’ infamous “If you see anybody from that cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd, and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.”
Behold, your middle-of-the-road party of hope and change:
Kirkpatrick was booed no less than five times. One heckler appears to yell, “You should be ashamed of yourself!”
This bit of video seems to belie a critical bit of Burns’ reporting: “In a source of relief to Democratic officials, the millennial-infused left has left a lighter mark in moderate areas where Republicans are defending their congressional majorities, and where bluntly left-wing candidates could struggle to win. In House races, Democrats have mainly picked nominees well to the left of center, but to the right of Mr. Sanders and Ms. Ocasio-Cortez,” he writes.
“Across most of the approximately 60 Republican-held districts that Democrats are contesting, primary voters have chosen candidates who seem to embody change — many of them women and minorities — but who have not necessarily endorsed positions like single-payer health care and abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.”
Kirkpatrick is the Democrat establishment’s chosen candidate, having been endorsed by the DNCC and raised the most money. However, the base apparently loathes her, simply because she believes in civility and ICE’s mission.
The seat may lean toward the Democrats now. Who knows what will happen, however, if its Democrats nominate someone who represents the values of the voters we saw Thursday?
