Democrats Have Backed Themselves Into a Corner with Impeachment Obsession

Share

Democrats have been obsessed with the possibility of impeaching President Donald Trump, but their impeachment obsession might end up hurting the Democratic Party.

Impeachment talks should have ended after Trump was vindicated by the failed Russian investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller, which found no evidence of collusion between Trump and Russia.

But Democrats were not satisfied with the Mueller report, and the Democrat-controlled House is threatening to subpoena members of the Trump administration and others in a desperate attempt to get more dirt.

“We’re fighting all the subpoenas,” Trump said last month.

Trump’s vow to fight Democrats’ frivolous subpoenas might be seen as a dare to start impeachment proceedings, which would be an arduous process that wouldn’t end well for Democrats.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is cautiously trying to avoid taking the “impeachment” bait.

“Impeachment is one of the most divisive things you can do,” Pelosi warned during a press conference on Thursday.

It’s obvious to Republicans that Trump was cleared by Mueller’s report and that Democrats are desperately trying to find new dirt on Trump with their incessant subpoena threats.

And that’s a message that can be clearly communicated to the American people — it would be ridiculous to impeach Trump because he has done nothing worthy of impeachment.

Democrats, on the other hand, would struggle making a clear case for impeachment, but that’s not stopping the more radical wing of the Democratic Party, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, from aggressively pursuing impeachment proceedings.

Ocasio-Cortez told Vice News that there’s “no choice” but to impeach Trump.

“When we start having these hearings and the truth starts coming to life in the public body, in the public eye, we’re going to have almost no choice but to impeach. This is not even a political question,” the self-identified socialist said.

Would impeachment proceedings against Trump fail?

The Democrats have effectively backed themselves into a corner, and either way, it’s going to split the party in half between those who want impeachment and those who would rather attempt to beat Trump at the ballot box.

If Democrats attempt to impeach Trump, their efforts are unlikely to succeed and will only galvanize Trump’s loyal base going in to 2020.

If Democrats decide against impeaching Trump, the frustrated “progressive” wing will start to go after moderate Democrats and might end up with more renegade radicals like Ocasio-Cortez.

The Democrats have been obsessed with impeachment since Trump took office, and now it’s time for them to face the consequences of their careless rhetoric.
