Even Lib Bill Maher Is Hopeless over 2020 Dems, Rips Candidates Apart in Brutal Routine
What a difference four years make.
Not so long ago, one of America’s snarkiest talking heads openly mocked the idea that Donald Trump could win the White House.
Now, that same person just acknowledged there might not be any candidate who can stop him in 2020.
We’re talking, of course, about Bill Maher.
On Friday, the sarcastic comedian and political commentator panned the two dozen declared Democrat candidates (give or take a few depending on the seriousness of their candidacy), and essentially admitted that Trump has a good chance of being re-elected next year.
“There’s lots of people I like, but when I ask, ‘A sure thing?’ No, no, no, no, no,” Maher said.
He ran down the list of the top liberal contenders, quickly pointing out their flaws.
Joe Biden? “Young people look at him like a typewriter’s running for president,” Maher quipped about the 76-year-old former vice president.
How about Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren?
As “a three-syllable woman in a one-syllable country,” she can’t connect with everyday Americans, the “Real Time” host suggested.
There’s also the pesky fact that she’s about as exciting as a plain baked potato.
Maher didn’t just go after Biden and Warren.
“Bernie Sanders is an American hero in my book,” he said of the Vermont independent senator. “But he’s another one who has his cardiologist on speed dial.”
As for Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Maher said, “I like Mayor Pete but we must … ask the question: Is America ready to be led by a gay teenager?”
“He’s 37, he looks 27. He’s the only veteran who came back from Afghanistan looking refreshed,” Maher said. “When he campaigns door-to-door, nobody answers because they’re afraid he’s a Mormon.”
But the liberal pundit, who is known for going after both sides when they pique his ire, also took the opportunity to present his plan: Recruit Oprah Winfrey to take on Trump.

“[W]hat matters is Oprah alone checks all the boxes that a Democrat needs to win,” Maher said, pointing out Winfrey’s legendary status among black Americans and female voters.
“[N]ever underestimate the power of being in people’s living rooms for decades. That’s what got Trump elected,” he added.
There are a few interesting elements here, but what’s most striking is that Maher still doesn’t seem to understand why Trump won in the first place.
Those last two quotes show that he’s still as clueless as the rest of the left, despite being a fairly sharp guy who considers both sides.
Look at Maher’s reasons behind wishing for a Winfrey campaign. It was literally a check-list of identity politics: Black voters, check. Women voters, check — as if the American people are just demographic groups who need to be tossed a bone in order to vote how Democrats want them to.
And if being on television screens for decades guarantees a win, how does Maher explain Hillary Clinton’s upset loss in 2016?
As a first lady-turned-senator-turned-secretary of state, Clinton was on television constantly since about 1991, but her 25 years of “being in people’s living rooms” didn’t seem to help in 2016.
Actually, it seems a lot of voters were tired of both Clinton and her “I’m next in line” mentality.
No, if Maher really wants to learn something, he should re-watch his own show.
During a 2015 episode, Maher eagerly joined his liberal guests in mocking right-leaning author Ann Coulter for daring to suggest that Trump had a solid shot at winning.
Ironically, it was largely that very elitist, head-in-a-bubble snobbery which catapulted Trump to the White House.
People were tired of being told how to think by their self-appointed “superiors” in places like Hollywood, and it turns out that being smugly lectured doesn’t go over well in the heartland.
In other words, Maher may not actually have much of a clue about election trends and the pulse of the people after all.
With that said, the fact that even the anti-Trump snark-slinger has given up hope for a Democrat victory in the next election is rather telling.
Liberals do not have a star candidate for 2020, and their own side is getting nervous.
As Maher put it: “I am telling you that at this particular moment in history, in this particular election year, [Winfrey] is the only candidate who’s a sure-thing winner for the Democrats.”
It ain’t over till it’s over, as they say, but the left sure seems to be facing an uphill battle if they want to stop Trump from securing another four years in office.
