Trump Gets Cornered on ACA Ruling: His 30-Second Response Says It All

Share

It was what some would call a long-overdue ruling.

A federal judge in Texas, U.S. District Court Judge Reed O’Connor, ruled that the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as “Obamacare,” was unconstitutional and, because it could not be separated from the rest of the act, the entire thing was invalid, according to The Hill.

The media cornered President Donald Trump about the ruling while he was on an unannounced visit to Arlington National Cemetery to honor the fallen and pay his respects to the “Wreaths Across America” volunteers. The Washington Post published video of the president’s very telling response.

He was obviously pleased by the ruling, stating, “It was a big ruling. It was a great ruling for our country.”

He also spoke about what was going to happen next. “We’ll be able to get great health care. We’ll sit down with the Democrats, if the Supreme Court upholds.”

Trump elaborated a little further, stressing that both parties would be enlisted in dealing with the ruling.

“We’ll be sitting down with the Democrats and we’ll get great health care for our people. Let’s say ‘Repeal and Replace,’ and a little bit differently.”

Trump briefly commented on the judge who issued the ruling, saying, “But, it was a big, big victory by a highly respected judge. Highly, highly respected in Texas.”

Are you happy about the ruling against Obamacare?

The president concluded his response by throwing down the gauntlet to the Democrats.

“And, on the assumption that the Supreme Court upholds, we will get great, great health care for our people. We’ll have to sit down with the Democrats to do it, but I’m sure they want to do it also.”

Noticeably, Trump stressed that the Republicans be seeking an opportunity to work with the Democrats on creating a replacement plan for Obamacare. But he also made it clear that if the Democrats really do want a great health care for the American people, as they claim, they will need to sit down with the Republicans and work with them on it.

Throughout his comments, Trump appeared to imply a certain level of confidence that O’Connor’s ruling was sound. If it is, it would naturally lead the Supreme Court to uphold the ruling when it inevitably comes up for challenge.

Some conservatives are celebrating the ruling, already declaring victory over the despised Obamacare. For them, this is one more win against former President Barack Obama and his legacy.

But others have concerns about what a replacement plan would look like. They fear conditions getting worse for both the working class and those truly in need of help with health care.

Still others have the same argument for a replacement plan that they had for Obamacare. They simply don’t want government involved in health care.

For now, the battle will continue over the constitutionality of Obamacare and what, if anything, will be put in its place. O’Conner’s ruling is just one win in what is still a long battle ahead.

But if the ruling is upheld, this will be one more win for Trump. And it will be one more promise kept.
