Watch: 'SNL' Takes on Biden with a Literal Punch to the Gut

Share

No one’s ever going to accuse “Saturday Night Live” of being fair and balanced, but it might get close sometimes.

On Saturday night, the notoriously liberal comedy show, which has spent the Trump presidency attacking the administration to the point of stifling boredom, turned its fire on a big-name Democrat for a change.

And actually earned some laughs in the process.

The show’s cold open featured “SNL” alum Jason Sudeikis returning to the stage where he made a mark impersonating Biden during the Obama presidency.

This time, of course, Sudeikis was sending up Biden’s current political problems caused by being just a little too hands-on when it comes to how he treats women he barely knows.

And Sudeikis had Biden’s buffoonery down pat.

Now, given the way the “SNL” cast has treated the Trump presidency, there’s no good reason to think the Saturday opening means the influential show is going to start hitting Democrats as hard as it trashes Republicans.

Do skits like this hurt Joe Biden's chances for the Democratic nomination?

(Even the Biden-bashing skit Saturday had a subtle jab accusing Trump voters of not actually caring about how women are treated.)

But it is a measure of how badly Biden has hurt himself that his foibles are the subject of mockery by one of the biggest liberal bastions of television today.

And the that “SNL” brought back Sudeikis for the engagement could mean that when it comes to making fun of Biden, the show is dead serious.

After Sudeikis impersonated Biden’s obscenely juvenile behavior during his 2012 debate with GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, according to USA Today, Biden reportedly told George Stephanopoulos on “Good Morning America” that Sudeikis was “so good it scared me.”

After Saturday night’s sendup, and the possibility Sudeikis might be returning if Biden actually does enter the Democratic primary race, Biden might have more reason to be scared than he knows.

That literal punch in the gut Biden’s character took in the “SNL” sketch could well be a metaphorical punch in the gut for Biden’s potential campaign if the pressure keeps up.

But the rest of the Democratic contenders now out to kneecap Biden’s nascent campaign should be paying attention too.

Obviously, a show like “Saturday Night Live” isn’t going to hit Democrats where their biggest weaknesses are.

Their ludicrous economic policies, a disastrous approach to health care, and morally bankrupt cynicism when it comes to topics like racism in the U.S. are never going to be the subject of a mocking cold open.

But if the show can at least make nod toward making fun of the weaknesses of one of the biggest names in the Democratic Party now, there’s at least a glimmer of a possibility of political parity going into the 2020 election season.

“Fair and balanced” is never going to be “SNL’s” motto, but sometimes it can come close.
