Gay Republican Rob Smith Defends Mario Lopez, Says Letting Kids Pick Gender 'Is Damaging'

Share

A gay conservative is defending actor Mario Lopez’s rejection of the transgender agenda this week.

And what’s more, he’s using the left-wing outrage surrounding Lopez to showcase the modern left’s willingness to sacrifice at the altar of radical progressivism anyone who breaks ranks even slightly.

Lopez, famed for his role on “Saved by the Bell,” took a beating from the outrage mob this week on social media for publicly denouncing the “dangerous” conception that parents should let toddlers choose their gender.

“If you’re 3 years old and you’re saying you’re feeling a certain way, and you think you’re a boy or girl, I think it’s dangerous as a parent to make that determination then,” Lopez told conservative activist Candace Owens in a June interview.

Of course, it is a high crime for a member of the Big Hollywood establishment to think freely and risk disagreeing with the progressive orthodoxy of the coastal elites — particularly if that means rejecting the obscenity of allowing children most people wouldn’t allow to dress themselves to alter the entire course of their upbringing by deciding they are no longer going to associate with the gender they were “assigned” at birth.

For the sake of his career, Lopez pivoted in an interview with People magazine, saying Wednesday that his remarks were “ignorant and insensitive” and that the endless stream of negative responses had given him “a deeper understanding of how hurtful [the comments] were.”

“I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community,” Lopez said.

Of course, by the Hollywood left’s logic, “ardent support” for his gay friends and colleagues meant the outright rejection of biological realities was in order.

According to the left, gender is an arbitrary assignment, not a biological fact, and you cannot support one part of the LGBTQ community without also supporting the depraved lunatics living on its outskirts.

But one conservative activist is putting that foolish notion to rest this week — and he’s gay.

“Like #MarioLopez – I ALSO had a conversation about trans kids with @RealCandaceO on @prageru,” Iraq War veteran and conservative columnist Rob Smith wrote Wednesday on Twitter, posting video from his own interview with Owens on the issue of transgenderism.

“As a gay man, I think this trend is damaging, I’m sad that more gays and lesbians are too afraid to speak out, and I WON’T be bullied into an apology,” Smith said.

He said the transgender movement has grown into a powerful, mainstream force in progressive circles primarily through fear.

Do you think it's harmful to allow toddlers to "choose" their gender?

“You have this idea now, because trans has become so big in our mainstream media, that a toddler or a little kid that says, ‘Oh, I’m a girl,’ that all of a sudden it’s time to put this child on hormones and to do things to this child’s body that cannot be reversed,” Smith told Owens. “And so that’s where we’re at right now.”

He said progressives are “afraid, because the thing about the left — and even LGBT people on the left — they’re so afraid to have these ideas. They’re so afraid to say something because they know they’ll be excommunicated.

“A lot of people say that, ‘Oh, you know, I didn’t leave the left, the left left me.’ The left left me when they said that me saying these things was transphobic.”
