Mom of 2 Devastated When Best Friend Can't Conceive, Gives Birth to Twins in Hospital Just for Her

Share

Many of us have had the privilege of sharing life with a friend who has been by our side since our earliest days. They may not be related by blood, but they become as close as any sibling.

Friends who are the same age as us can be a constant help, as you both tend to experience the same life events at roughly the same time and can commiserate or encourage one another.

That was how it was for Katelin Buchanan and Erica Huston-Elem. They were inseparable, and hit all the major milestones together.

“Our mom’s (sic) were best friends!” Huston-Elem said. “Her mom is my godmother … we grew up very much like family.”

“We just grew up together like siblings. Our friendship has been more than a friendship, it’s a sisterhood. We’ve been there through all our life’s experiences.”

Until one: starting a family.

Huston-Elem had two children, but Buchanan struggled to conceive. She went through multiple procedures to try to get pregnant, but none of them worked.

Finally, doctors told Buchanan that she was unable to have children. After all the work she’d put in and the miscarriages she’d gone through, the news was devastating.

“Over a number of years, there was a lot of loss and heartache on her part,” Huston-Elem said. “For me, as her best friend, watching her go through that and feeling completely helpless, it was a really difficult situation.”

“The moment I realized I could do something more to actually help her and volunteer to carry her babys (sic) for her was something I felt very passionate about. I told her … ‘I’d be more than willing to do it for you.’”

With a pledge like that from a friend as true as Huston-Elem, Buchanan accepted and they began the lengthy process to give her the children she so longed for.

Pregnancy is a stressful time all on its own, but Huston-Elem soon found out she was carrying twins for her best friend. So many things could have gone wrong or the friendship could have been strained — but everything went well and the experience actually brought these two friends even closer.

“Katelin and I talked a million times a day (throughout the pregnancy),” Huston-Elem said. “It brought us really close — even closer than we were before. We celebrated each milestone. The pregnancy was really, really joyful.”

The twins were born on March 20, and after a few weeks at the hospital they went home with Buchanan, who now has the family she’d been waiting for. Huston-Elem, amazing friend that she is, is also happy with the outcome.

“She is so amazing with those twins and so loving and everything I always knew she would be. Seeing her happy… has just been the greatest joy of my life.”

Now that’s a true best friend!
