Woman Buys Coffee for Stranger at Starbucks, Finds Emotional Note in Mailbox Next Day

When 19-year-old Mackenzie Mauller pulled up to a Starbucks window to pay for her own drink, she decided to also cover the person behind her in line. Not knowing the lady, she was just hoping to pass on a small act of kindness.

What Mauller didn’t know was just how much of an impact that would make.

The stranger’s name was Nicole Clawson and her trip to Starbucks that day was one filled with grief and despair.

Clawson’s father had just passed away so she was not only dealing with the grief of losing a parent, but her father was also the only babysitter she had lined up for her children.

His passing meant that she needed to quit her job and stay home, which was not a part of the plan. “Since I was not planning to go this route in my life, I was not emotionally and financially prepared to quit working,” she wrote.

Clawson had found a temporary babysitter until she was able to make the transition, but that babysitter had called in sick the morning she found herself in the Starbucks drive-thru. Clawson decided to buy breakfast for her kiddos and a cup of coffee for herself “with total guilt” because of the upcoming life change.

When the Starbucks employee let her know that the lady in front of her, Mauller, had already paid for her drink Clawson cried out of relief.

She wished there was a way for her to thank the kind woman.

As Clawson drove home, she noticed that the kind stranger only lived a few houses down from her own house; they were neighbors! The mother knew it was the perfect opportunity to express her deep gratitude.

“I felt it necessary for you to know that what you did for me was more than just a cup of coffee,” she wrote. “It was something that has turned my whole day around, put tears in my eyes, and a smile on my face and I feel so grateful. Thank you.”

After finishing the note, with the help of her children, she placed the note in Mauller’s mailbox and returned home.

The teen found the note the following day and posted a picture of the card on Twitter, hoping to encourage others to spread kindness.

“Small acts can make a big difference folks, spread some kindness,” she tweeted.

The tweet quickly went viral. As of Saturday afternoon, it had been shared over 21,000 times.

Even the coffee giant, Starbucks, shared the story saying, “Kindness matters.”

The heartwarming kindness doesn’t stop there. Clawson reached back out to the teen on Twitter to thank her once again and shared that Mauller had introduced herself and offered to babysit for her.

Clawson also shared that her children have been inspired to start paying it forward. “This has been such a great learning opportunity for them, on how to treat others, no matter what,” she wrote.

“They are excited to pay it forward, and treat others with kindness and selflessness.”

This story is such a sweet reminder that you never know what those around you are going through. It’s always worth being kind.
