Watch Clever Homeowner Scare Off Thieves in Disguise Using Doorbell Camera

Home security systems — yay or nay? While some of us might be a little wary to invite “big brother” type security systems into our lives, there’s no denying even the simplest of upgrades can make a difference.

Take doorbell cameras, for example. Easy to acquire and install, and one doesn’t need a lot of know-how to use one.

You can order a smart doorbell from Amazon for under $60. It even has an app you can use on your smartphone, giving you the ability to keep an eye on your home or business from miles away.

These devices have proven to work time and time again. Inside Edition reported a number of incidences in which thieves were scared off by a voice coming through a doorbell cam.

One video shows Michelle Tull, a homeowner from Texas, catching someone swiping packages from her front porch via the app on her phone.

When she confronted the porch pirate through the speaker on her porch cam, the thief apologized, claiming she thought she was at a different house.

Another incident in England was caught on a surveillance camera. The footage showed the inside of a cafe while the owner was thousands of miles away on vacation.

Do you have a doorbell security system?

If it hadn’t been for the live video surveillance, the cafe owner wouldn’t have been able to confront a thief over the speakers. The thief can be seen immediately leaving the store.

It only took a notification on the owner’s phone. Something so simple and yet so game-changing at the same time.

If you’re still not convinced, consider what happened to Clem Ho. According to Inside Edition, the Canadian man received a phone alert when someone was at his front door.

Video footage of the almost-burglary shows a man dressed in a neon postal worker vest knocking on the door.

When he doesn’t receive a response, another man walks up. The two proceed to break in, but a voice over the security camera intercom stops them.

“Get away from the door!” Ho calls through the app on his phone. The thieves are quickly scared off and a break-in is ultimately prevented.

“I’ve gotten Facebook messages from people in the Philippines and the Middle East asking me about the doorbell,” Ho told The Strategist following the incident. “I started offering tech support. Unpaid! I’m happy to do it if it’s keeping people safe.”

Do you use doorbell security cameras or other types of surveillance in your home? If not, maybe now is the time to start considering one. The benefits clearly can’t be denied.
