New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox To Play Regular-Season Game at 'Field of Dreams' Cornfield

Share

Ask sports fans what their favorite sports movies are and you’ll likely get a wide range of answers.

You’ll probably hear “Hoosiers,” “Rocky,” “Remember the Titans” and “Miracle,” just to name a few.

You might even hear “Space Jam,” though those people would be wrong.

Another movie they might mention? The iconic 1989 baseball film “Field of Dreams.”

For those unaware, “Field of Dreams” stars Kevin Costner as an Iowa farmer who somehow opens up a temporal wormhole that brings some of baseball’s greatest legends to play on a handmade baseball diamond in the middle of a cornfield.

It’s probably safe to say that the ghosts of baseball’s past will not appear at that legendary field in Dyersville, Iowa, on Aug. 13, 2020, but there will be some star power there next MLB season.

The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox will play a regular-season game there.

Sports Illustrated broke the news Thursday.

Do you want to see MLB have more special events like this game in the regular season?

“Under a backdrop of corn as high as an elephant’s eye, the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox will play a regular season game Aug. 13 next season on the diamond in Dyersville, Iowa, where the movie ‘Field of Dreams’ was shot in 1988, multiple sources told SI. The game will be broadcast by Fox,” SI’s Tom Verducci wrote.

Both the Yankees and White Sox confirmed this news on social media.

MLB also posted the news to its official website Friday.

“MLB at Field of Dreams presented by GEICO will be nationally broadcast on FOX at 7 p.m. ET. and, following the precedent of the now-annual Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pa., and this year’s MLB in Omaha at the NCAA’s College World Series site, is the latest example of the game bringing itself to iconic American baseball venues outside of typical big league jurisdiction,” MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince wrote.

The Baltimore Orioles will play the Boston Red Sox in the aforementioned Little League Classic next season.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed excitement over the prospects of major league teams playing at the iconic Iowa landmark.

“As a sport that is proud of its history linking generations, Major League Baseball is excited to bring a regular season game to the site of Field of Dreams,” Manfred told MLB.com. “We look forward to celebrating the movie’s enduring message of how baseball brings people together at this special cornfield in Iowa.”

A temporary 8,000-seat mini-ballpark will be constructed to showcase the special event. Construction will begin Tuesday, which is exactly one year before the “Field of Dreams” game will take place.
