'Shark Tank' Star Barbara Corcoran's Brother Found Dead in Hotel Room in Dominican Republic

Real estate agent and “Shark Tank” star Barbara Corcoran credits her extraordinary business success to growing up with nine siblings. On National Sibling Day, Corcoran posted a sweet message to Instagram alongside a nostalgic photo of the large family she grew up with.

“I’m 10 times blessed having grown up as 1 of 10 children,” the 70-year-old businesswoman wrote.

“My mom taught us that every child had a special talent and we all had to pitch in if we were going to be a strong family. I later built a happy company 1000 people strong on those two simple principals.”

Barbara’s brother, John Corcoran, applied those values to his life and career as well. Although he never appeared on his own television show, he found success as the owner of a New Jersey roofing company. According to TMZ, John was Corcoran’s “favorite brother.”

In April, Corcoran received shocking news about her beloved sibling. John Corcoran was found dead in a hotel room in the Dominican Republic, where the 60-year-old had been vacationing with a friend and his girlfriend. Emily Burke, Barbara Corcoran’s assistant, recently confirmed the report.

“John Corcoran passed away at the end of April in the DR from what is believed to be natural causes,” Burke told Fox News. “He loved and frequently visited the Dominican Republic. Barbara would like to respect the privacy of his children and is not releasing any other information at this time.”

Barbara Corcoran told TMZ that she is unaware if an autopsy was performed, but recently wrote on Facebook that her brother had an “existing heart condition.”

John Corcoran is just one of the many tourists who have died under similar circumstances in the Dominican Republic. The frequency of these deaths has sparked an FBI investigation of the hotels at which the deaths have occurred.

According to NPR, seven tourists from the United States have been discovered dead in their hotels. What is most puzzling is that the deaths were sudden – many family members insist that the individuals had no prominent health issues before leaving on vacation. The deaths were reportedly caused by a heart attack or, in at least two cases, fluid in the lungs.

A few of the deaths reportedly occurred after the individuals drank alcohol from the hotels’ minibars. The location of John Corcoran’s death has not been released to the public, but at least two of the previous incidents occurred at hotels owned by Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts.

According to the company’s statement, “there are no indications of correlation between these two unfortunate incidents.”

“The safety and security of U.S. citizens that live in, work in, and visit the Dominican Republic remains our highest priority,” Robin Bernstein, U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic, said in an official statement. “These incidents are tragic and we offer our deepest condolences to those personally impacted.”

The FBI has teamed with Dominican Republic authorities to conduct toxicity analyses, but the process may take up to a month before the public hears any updates. Meanwhile, it’s unsurprising that many people have canceled their vacations.

“I’m overwhelmed with sadness for the lost lives in the DR and my thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones,” Barbara Corcoran wrote on Facebook this morning. “Thank you for all your thoughts and good wishes. I appreciate your love and kindness.”
