Teen Football Player Passes Away Days After Game, Doctors Confirm Crushing Cause of Death
The dangers of football are real. While it is an American sport that brings communities together, playing the game can also come with consequences.
As tough as these football players are on the field, they too can succumb to injury or in some cases even death.
While a number of precautions from helmets to pads are taken to protect players, it isn’t always enough.
For Dylan Thomas, it would lead to a grave and serious situation, according to WMAZ.
Thomas was a Georgia high school linebacker with a full life ahead of him.
During one Friday night football game, he suffered an injury that was severe enough to require immediate medical attention.
The injury occurred during his Pike County High School game, and Thomas, like many players on his team, got hurt in the thick of the action.
But for Thomas, his head injury would cost him his life.
After being taken to the sidelines during the game, Thomas let his trainers know he had no feeling in his left leg.
He was urgently airlifted to an Atlanta hospital for medical treatment for a head injury.
During the next 40-45 hours, Thomas would undergo a myriad of tests as well as multiple surgeries to try and save his life.
But ultimately, these lifesaving measures would not be enough.
Two days after his Friday night game, Thomas was pronounced dead on Sept. 30, 2018.
According to the coroner, the teen died due to cardiac arrest caused by his “traumatic brain injury due to or as a consequence of a closed head injury,” CNN reported.
The coroner’s report concluded that Thomas’ fatal injury was an “anomaly” that required “the perfect amount of pressure on the perfect spot at the perfect angle,” according to WMAZ.
Thomas did not have any other pre-existing conditions and was not more susceptible to this type of injury than any other player on the team.
The coroner also maintained that there were no additional medical treatments or measures that could have been taken to save the young man’s life.
Hundreds attended the young footballer’s funeral, including teens from rival high schools and teams, to honor the life of the teen gone too soon.
