84-Year-Old Husband Learns To Do Wife's Makeup After She Starts To Lose Sight

Share

Most makeup artists have an eye for color and shape. They spend a lot of time perfecting their methods and creating a signature style.

Most makeup artists don’t start their careers in their 80s, but as makeup artist Rosie O’Driscoll said, 84-year-old Des was a natural as soon as he had the brush in his hand.

Des wasn’t interested in the craft for itself, though. His goal was to help someone else.

Mona, his wife and the love of his life, was going blind. Already having lost sight in her left eye, she was unable to apply her makeup with the same deftness she’d once possessed, and Des had to help.

“So I would be doing little corrections like that with her,” Des said. “This birthday party came up. Mona decided ‘I’m going get my face done up for the party.’ And we happened to hit into Rosie.”

So when they went out before a party one day to get her made up professionally, they met Rosie O’Driscoll, and Des took notes.

But that wasn’t the end of the makeup road for the couple. Their story was discovered by some big names.

Mario Dedivanovic, Kim Kardashian’s artist, fell in love with the couple and their beautiful story. He told his manager he wanted Des and Mona in London at his masterclass.

Now an aspect of their lives that had been merely peripheral was taking the center stage. An amused Mona seemed surprised by the reception they’ve received.

“He just seemed to want to know us,” Mona said of Dedivanovic. “He seemed to want to have us there. It’s and effort for me to even realize how big it was.”

“Makeup and Mario and the Kardashians and that, absolutely nothing in our lives up until now.”

Meanwhile, Des still lovingly applies foundation and sets it. He gives Mona’s eyelashes a few coats of mascara, and tints her lips a subtle pink.

You can see the love between them in the way they speak to one another and hold hands.

“Mona and I both agree on one thing,” Des said. “And that is that less is more. There’s no way I want my lovely Mona slapped up with stuff.”
