Brian Urlacher upset that Cowboys star Woodson not joining him in Hall of Fame

Share

Chicago Bears great Brian Urlacher will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August, but he’s not happy that one person isn’t a member of his Canton class.

The legendary linebacker appeared on the “Shan & RJ” show on Dallas-Fort Worth’s KRLD-FM Wednesday and talked about his childhood love for the Cowboys and one player in particular.

“So I grew up a Cowboys fan,” Urlacher said. “I grew up in New Mexico, and the mid-’90s there was our heyday. Darren Woodson is my favorite player of all time.”

Asked about Woodson not being in the Hall of Fame, Urlacher erupted.

“It drives me crazy!” he said. “I don’t understand it. He has three rings, correct? I don’t know how much of a big deal that is to the voters, but he had a good career. He was the big safety … he was the guy that I think made that defense go.

“I know they were good up front, they had Ken Norton in the middle and everything, but Darren Woodson to me was a beast — my favorite player of all time.”

Do you think Darren Woodson belongs in the Hall of Fame?

Woodson was one of the all-time greats on one of the NFL’s most storied franchises. In a 12-year career in Dallas that began when he was selected in the second round of the 1992 draft out of Arizona State, he was named first-team All-Pro four times and earned five Pro Bowl nods.

Woodson also won three Super Bowl rings as a key part of the team’s 1990s dynasty.

The hard-hitting safety remains the Cowboys’ all-time leading tackler with 813 stops, and he was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor in 2015.

Woodson was one of the 108 modern-era nominees for the Hall of Fame Class of 2018, but he didn’t make the first cut of 27 semifinalists.

That angered Cowboys fans, who lashed out on Twitter.

While the great safety isn’t headed to Canton just yet, Urlacher is part of a stellar Hall of Fame Class of 2018 that includes fellow linebackers Ray Lewis and Robert Brazile, wide receivers Randy Moss and Terrell Owens, safety Brian Dawkins, guard Jerry Kramer and contributor Bobby Beathard.
