Buckingham Palace Pays Respects to Aretha Franklin During Changing of the Guard
People all over the world celebrated Aretha Franklin’s life on Friday, Aug. 31, 2018. The Queen of Soul’s funeral took place in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan, but the Queen of England also set aside some time at Buckingham Palace to honor the iconic singer in a special way.
Franklin died on Aug. 16, 2018, after battling pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by loved ones in her home.
The R&B artist was born into a musical family in Memphis, Tennessee. She recorded her first album when she was only 14-years-old, according to Biography.com.
With Grammy-winning hits like “Respect” and “Freeway of Love,” there’s no doubt that she had an incredible impact on music during her lifelong career.
She was 76-years-old when she passed away.
Her funeral was held in Detroit, Michigan, on Friday, August 31.
The Queen of England also decided to take a moment to pay her respects to Franklin.
Every couple of months, when a new set of guards come to protect Buckingham Palace, a song is played to signify the change of responsibility.
The Queen has used this moment in the past to recognize and commemorate different world events. For example, The United States of America’s National Anthem was played there on the day following the 9/11 attacks.
On the same day as the funeral for Aretha Franklin, the Band of the Welsh Guard performed one of her most recognizable hits, “Respect.”
A video of the tribute was posted on the Army in London’s Twitter page.
“Respect for others underpins all we do in the @BritishArmy so it was no surprise that the @WelshGuardsBand paid tribute to musical icon and inspiration #ArethaFranklin at Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace today,” the tweet read.
The video has since been retweeted over 3,000 times as of Friday morning.
Aretha, you are dearly missed. Not only by those here in your home country but all over the world as well. May you rest in peace.
