Biden Assures Supporters: 'I'm Not Going Nuts,' Forgets Where He Is the Next Day

If Democrats weren’t worried about their front-runner before, they should be now.

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s string of statements recently have indicated an alarming disconnect between the top contender for the Democratic presidential nomination and the reality around him.

But one statement Biden made on Friday apparently intended to reassure his listeners might have had exactly the opposite effect.

Speaking in New Hampshire, according to the Washington Examiner, the 76-year-old apparently got confused about speaking earlier at Dartmouth College.

“I want to be clear, I’m not going nuts,” Biden said. “I’m not sure whether it was the medical school or where the hell I spoke. But it was on the campus.”

Well, it’s good to know that the man the Democratic Party is convinced can take on President Donald Trump in 2020 thinks it’s necessary to tell his audiences that he’s entirely all right in the head.

But the fact that it had to be made at all is not a good sign for Biden or his party.

That it came only a day before Biden once again got confused and apparently forgot what state he was speaking in was an even worse sign.

On Saturday, in Keene, New Hampshire, Biden began praising the beauty of Vermont.

Do you think Joe Biden will be the Democrats' nominee after this?

As word of the “I’m not going nuts” quote spread Monday in a story published by the Los Angeles Times, the social media reaction was what you might expect.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, arguably one of the most influential Republicans of his era and a staunch Trump supporter, asked the obvious question: If Biden isn’t crazy, why is he giving voters even the suggestion that he might be?

“When Vice President Joe Biden said, ‘I want to be clear, I’m not going nuts,’ it may have been the strangest campaign slogan ever,” Gingrich wrote. “It will be interesting to see how he recovers from planting the notion in voters mind. you could ask if he isn’t going nuts what is he doing?”

Of course, Gingrich drew his share of liberals going from the defensive to the offensive in their Twitter responses, but some kindred conservatives caught the spirit.

And then there was this serious take on it.

Unfortunately for Biden and the Democrats who’ve pinned their hopes on him, that last one seems to be getting truer by the day.

The time when Biden’s seemingly infinite number of gaffes can be excused is rapidly running out, and the septuagenarian’s mental acumen could well be as big an issue as Hillary Clinton’s physical health was in the 2016 race.

Biden is not doing himself or his supporters any favors by publicly declaring, “I’m not going nuts.”

It makes it sound like he already has.
