Something's Happening: Ginsburg Cancels Another Event to 'Focus on Work' Despite Missing Work
When it was first announced that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was undergoing surgery, many people on both sides of the political aisle wished her a speedy recovery. But it appears that her recovery may not be as speedy as anyone had hoped.
But that is not all. Given Ginsburg’s position and the fact that if she leaves the bench, President Donald Trump would be able to nominate a third justice for the Supreme Court, there are reasons why some on the left might be pushing for any truly poor recovery to be covered-up.
To date, while Ginsburg has not attended oral arguments at the court, she has reportedly been doing at least some work at home while she recovers. CNN wrote that she has been reviewing briefings from home.
In addition, while the other members of the Supreme Court will be in attendance at a “regularly scheduled conference — Ginsburg is likely to vote by proxy.” While this may be understandable while in recovery, it hardly seems like a legitimate way to perform her duties on a permanent basis.
That would be, by all accounts, simply her and the left wanting to hold onto the seat to prevent Trump from appointing another justice. There are those who say that the left uses the judiciary to create law.
On top of all of that, Ginsburg has canceled appearances at two upcoming events. Talking Points Memo noted that one event was slated for January 29 at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles, California where she was going to give a speech.
The reason given for her cancellation, according to the Skirball event description, was that “the Justice is curtailing travel and focusing on her work while recuperating from recent surgery.” She has already missed two weeks of oral arguments, and now foresees being out unable to leave home for roughly another two weeks.
The second event that was canceled, according to CNN, was “a long-planned conversation between Ginsburg and the financier and philanthropist David Rubenstein.”
This event was supposed to happen on February 6. The 92nd Street Y is looking at rescheduling the event, and CNN reported that they explained the reason for the event cancellation by email.
“Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg regrets that she is unable to attend the talk with David Rubenstein at 92Y on February 6. She is curtailing travel and focusing on her work while recuperating from recent surgery.”

Some might suggest that it seems odd she is canceling events to focus on work, but isn’t going to work. And not only is she reviewing briefings from home, but she is also voting by proxy.
CNN noted that the upcoming regularly scheduled conference she will be missing will likely involve her voting by proxy.
The justices are scheduled to return to the bench on February 19. There is no word yet as to whether Ginsburg will be among them or not.
Ginsburg is 85 years old. At that age, recovery takes more time than it would for a younger person and full recoveries are not the norm.
So this raises the question as to whether or not she’ll be able to physically appear again in the Supreme Court to hear oral arguments and fully do her job. While most don’t wish her ill, if she is unable to return to the full scope of her duties, it would seem that the ethical thing for her to do would be to step down.
NPR reported that Ginsburg is fine, based on a statement issued by the Supreme Court.
Kathleen L. Arberg, court spokeswoman, said, “Her recovery from surgery is on track. Post-surgery evaluation indicates no evidence of remaining disease, and no further treatment is required.”
If that is the case, it is good news for Ginsburg and the left. However, if it is glossing over the reality of her health situation, it is bad news for them all.
If her health was not as great as reported and she stepped down from the bench, then the Democrats will lose her vote and that vote will likely be replaced by someone who is a Constitutionalist, rather than a leftist activist. And the Democrats fighting such a nominee would only further out them as seeking to push their own agenda rather than have the Constitution upheld.
As long as the left can maintain some power in the Supreme Court, they can continue to chip away at President Trump and his policies. Ginsburg’s vote and her remaining on the bench is so incredibly important to the left that it’s more important that doing the right thing.
