Hypocrisy: De Blasio Calls For Action With Immigration, Enraged When Illegals Take Refuge in NYC

Share

Outrage from the left over separating children from the lawbreaking adults who drag them across the border may have cooled after President Donald Trump signed an order rolling back the practice, but there is still plenty of frustration to go around.

There are also countless questions. One of more suprising of them is coming from New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who wants to know: What are migrants doing in my city?

The leftist mayor is now upset that even though settling in the United States was the objective of border-crossers, they ended up in New York without his knowledge.

On Wednesday, De Blasio spoke outside Cayuga Centers in Harlem, a social services agency that has been contracted by the government to provide assistance to unaccompanied minors who cross the border. Cayuga helps place migrant children into temporary foster care and runs programs for them during the day.

In other words, it’s the polar opposite of what is being reported by much of the mainstream media.

Instead of being detained at the border or, as the left has deceptively claimed, placed in cages, the young refugees are being transported deeper into America and connected with social services along with foster homes.

Normally, this would be the kind of do-good agency that liberals would celebrate — but these aren’t normal times. Bizarrely, De Blasio is apparently outraged that these refugees are being given, well, refuge.

“Mr. de Blasio said the federal government would not tell city officials exactly how many children were sent to New York or where they were being housed,” reported The New York Times. “The office of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said the state also did not know the exact number.”

Exactly why the mayor needed to know the details of a federal program isn’t clear, but he’s mad as hell, and is finding every way possible to direct his ire at the Trump administration.

Has the media has distorted the child immigration issue?

“How is it possible that none of us knew that there were 239 kids right here in our own city?” he asked.

“How is the federal government holding back that information from the people of this city and holding back the help these kids could need?” De Blasio continued, despite the evidence that the kids were already being helped by organizations like Cayuga Centers.

“The Cayuga welfare agency has received the majority of the children separated from their parents at the border, said Bitta Mostofi, the city’s commissioner of immigrant affairs,” explained the Times.

“She said that Cayuga currently serves 600 unaccompanied minors (including those who did not come with parents), and that it planned to add 300 more spaces over the summer,” the report  continued.

“The Council of Family and Child Caring Agencies, an organization whose members include the 10 state welfare agencies that are contracted with the government, said that the agencies were providing ‘homelike settings with high-quality, trauma-informed services,'” the outlet stated.

Isn’t that a good thing, at least for pro-immigrant voices?

To put it bluntly, liberals are getting what they previously claimed to want, but still aren’t happy.

Instead of being treated like criminals or sent home, the young refugees are being housed and cared for in New York, a city famous for opportunity and its iconic statue that marked a new beginning for so many past immigrants.

If the left isn’t happy for getting what it demanded, neither are many immigrants. Shockingly, a good number of the young border-crossers have apparently changed their minds about wanting to leave their home countries, and are now asking to be sent back.

“The children are entitled to their own court hearings, and, according to lawyers who have dealt with their cases, some of them have asked to be sent back to Central America,” reported The New York Times.

“[Child services director Anthony Enriquez] said that lawyers for Catholic Charities have handled 18 cases of separated children who have asked judges for ‘voluntary departure,’ or to be sent back, and another 15 were considering that option.”

That seems to fly in the face of liberal claims that the “poor, innocent” refugees only want to escape the hellish conditions of their home countries and it would be inhumane to deport them.

If illegal immigrants in the resettlement program are now openly asking to be sent back to Central America, were they lying or exaggerating about their reasons for trekking across the border and entering America to begin with?

To be clear, the existing system is riddled with problems and it certainly needs to improve. Both sides of the immigration debate acknowledge that the government is becoming overwhelmed with the task of managing and tracking the migrants who flood across the border, both adults and children.

With that said, De Blasio’s puzzling outrage over immigrants coming to New York is a strong example of the mixed messages and hypocrisy that are dominating this issue.

By the Democrat mayor and the New York Times’ own admission, the young immigrants being placed into care in New York are being treated with dignity, given legal advice, safe housing, and a list of other benefits that are a far cry from the dingy conditions alleged by other outlets.

De Blasio exemplifies so much of the the left right now: Outraged, but not entirely sure why; Demanding compassion, but then still irate when migrants receive it.

It seems yelling and hand-wringing have replaced reason, and now kids are the ones caught in the middle.
