Illegal Border Crossings Spiked to Record Levels in May
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection released its numbers for May. And they are disturbing.
Last month, more than 144,000 migrants along the U.S. southern border were apprehended or immediately found to be inadmissible. That is a record for the agency and a 32% increase over April’s numbers.
Of those, almost 133,000 crossed the border illegally.
“We are in a full blown emergency, and I cannot say this stronger: the system is broken,” John Sanders, the acting Customs and Border Protection commissioner, said.
The spike in migrants from Northern Triangle countries — Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador — continued to climb, as May was the third consecutive month that more than 100,000 migrants were apprehended.
Of those caught entering illegally — more than 132,000 — 84,000 were traveling as a family unit, 36,000 were single adults and 11,000 were unaccompanied children.
That brings the total number of illegal crossings this year to 610,000.
Already this year, CBP has encountered 182 large groups, which are defined as having more than 100 people. “They’ve only increased as the fiscal year has gone,” Brian Hastings, chief of law enforcement operations, said.
A staggering 593,507 apprehensions have already occurred on the border this year.
The number of inadmissibles at the southern border now totals 82,808 for 2019.
President Donald Trump is continuing to encourage Mexico to ramp up its efforts to stopping the illegals surging across the border.
“Mexico, you know, wants to make a deal,” Trump said Wednesday to a group of reporters in Ireland. “They have their entire delegation right now going over to probably the White House location to negotiate with our people.”
“The drugs that are coming in, the people that are coming in unchecked, they’re swamping our border,” Trump said. “They’re coming up by the millions. Mexico can stop it. They have to stop it. Otherwise, we just won’t be able to do business. It’s a very simple thing.”
The crisis at the border is obvious. The left wants to deny a crisis exists — until the left admits that it does. The left is effectively refusing to help turn off the water faucet, but then screaming at Trump for the sink getting full.
Whatever crisis exists, it is primarily one of sustainability. And the solution is primarily one of securing the southern border and then addressing the illegal immigrants who are present.
Until there can be a consensus that the current influx of illegal aliens is unacceptable, the problem will not only continue but increase exponentially so.
