'People Are Going To Die' Ocasio-Cortez's Latest Gaffe Is Going Viral for All the Wrong Reasons

Share

Democratic Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez used Twitter on Friday to claim that “people are going to die” if U.S. lawmakers don’t create a “Green New Deal” to address climate change concerns.

“People are going to die if we don’t start addressing climate change ASAP,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “It’s not enough to think it’s ‘important.’ We must make it urgent.”

After claiming people will die, Ocasio-Cortez suggested a “Green New Deal” to address the problem.

“That’s why we need a Select Committee on a Green New Deal, & why fossil fuel-funded officials shouldn’t be writing climate change policy,” she tweeted.

Of course, Ocasio-Cortez is referring to her own proposed legislation, which would create a select committee in the House to address climate change concerns.

Ocasio-Cortez hopes that the committee would orchestrate a complete switch to renewable energy for electricity generation in 10 years, according to The Hill.

Now it’s clear why Ocasio-Cortez would make such a ridiculously alarming statement. She wanted an attention-seeking way to advertise her “Green New Deal” plan.

Is it wrong for a representative to use alarmist language like this?

It’s terrible that she would claim “people are going to die” to promote her legislation. Her statement is made even worse after learning that her proposed legislation wouldn’t even be sufficient in stopping global climate change.

Even if she was right about climate change projections and her legislation did pass, it would only make a small dent in global carbon dioxide emissions.

According to EPA statistics, the United States contributes only 15 percent toward world carbon dioxide emissions, compared to 30 percent from China alone.

Contrary to what Ocasio-Cortez wants you to believe, her proposed legislation wouldn’t save people from her doomsday scenario.

Fortunately, Twitter users were quick to point out that China is the main culprit behind emissions.

Twitter users also pointed out that her legislation isn’t necessary. There are free-market solutions to her proposed problem.

Ocasio-Cortez purposely used hyperbolic language to promote her legislation. She made a doomsday prediction and offered her “Green New Deal” as the only alternative.
