Talk About Grasping at Straws, Beto Implies the Electoral College Is Just Like Slavery
A growing number of Democrats are demanding the Electoral College be abolished in favor of a national popular vote, undoubtedly as a response to the failed 2016 Democratic candidate having gained more popular votes in the election yet coming up short in electoral votes. Thankfully, that urging by leftists has been blocked by that pesky Constitution and the convoluted process for passing amendments.
The latest prominent Democrat to call for the abolition of the Electoral College is 2020 Democratic candidate and former Texas Rep. Robert “Beto” O’Rourke, who ludicrously insinuated that the Electoral College was a national mistake akin to slavery, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
O’Rourke never explicitly said “slavery,” but he didn’t have to, as his reference to it was clearly implied as he answered a question from the audience during the annual We the People Membership Summit on Monday in Washington D.C.
When he was asked if he was in favor of eliminating the Electoral College, O’Rourke enthusiastically replied, “Yes, let’s abolish the Electoral College.”
The former congressman recalled how he and his wife had discussed in 2016 how they would explain to their children that “the person who got three million more votes just lost the election.”
That “three million more votes” line is key, as it has been repeated by sore losers on the left since the election. It is also incredibly disingenuous, as those “three million more votes” can be successfully argued as having come almost exclusively from the decidedly Democratic states of California and New York, which had been won handily by Hillary Clinton.
The whole reason for the Electoral College being placed in the Constitution in the first place was to ensure that voters in the less populated states would have a balanced and equal say in elections with the states that hosted major population centers.
Hillary Clinton may have obtained more votes overall by tapping into the increasingly secluded urban population centers along the East and West Coasts, but President Donald Trump won the election by garnering a victory in more states than Clinton did.
None of that matters to Democrats like O’Rourke, however, as he proceeded to lambast the Electoral College as a massive mistake by our nation’s founders that was, at least in his view, on par with and even directly related to the since-abolished institution of slavery.
“This is one of those bad compromises we made at day one in this country,” O’Rourke said. “There are many others we can think of and they are all connected, including the value of some people based on the color of their skin.”
“There is a legacy and a series of consequences that have persisted and remain with us to this day,” he continued.
“In this conversation about how we repair the damage, how we make things right, and how we keep from committing the same injustice going forward, is squarely connected to the reason that we are all convened here today, and that is fixing our democracy,” O’Rourke said.
“So yes, if we got rid of the Electoral College, we get a little bit closer to ‘one person, one vote’ in the United States of America,” he added.
This can only be described as a call for pure democracy with a national popular vote, which will inevitably result in mob rule and tyranny of the majority, which is exactly what the founders sought to prevent with the creation of the Electoral College.
The most ironic aspect of this push is the ridiculous claim that doing so and installing a national popular vote in its place would result in the votes of all Americans across the country being the deciding factor in presidential elections, rather than just the votes of the ever-shifting toss-up “swing states.”
However, as previously noted, the end result of a national popular vote would be for the mere handful of coastal states with large populations, specifically California and New York, to outvote and dictate who the winner is over the votes of virtually everyone else in the rest of the country, and that simply can’t be allowed to happen.
