Tucker Carlson Scorches Ted Lieu on Mueller Disaster -- 'Tinfoil Ted Is a Nutcake'

Share

Fox News host Tucker Carlson didn’t hold anything back Friday in going after Democratic California Rep. Ted Lieu, who questioned former special counsel Robert Mueller this week on why President Donald Trump wasn’t indicted.

Mueller testified before the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees, and while Democrats were hoping for dirt on Trump, he didn’t reveal any bombshells that weren’t in his report.

“Democrats prodded him like a zoo animal, hoping that he would transform suddenly into Clarence Darrow and deliver an epic speech denouncing Trump as a traitor to our nation and a war criminal,” Carlson said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

“But he didn’t do that, so California’s Ted Lieu pushed him. Lieu tried to make Mueller explain even though he did not indict Trump, Trump should still be in prison,” Carlson added.

In questioning Mueller, Lieu referred to a decades-old internal Justice Department guideline that protects a sitting president from being indicted by the federal government.

The policy comes from a 1973 memorandum from the DOJ’s Office of Legal Counsel, written while then-President Richard Nixon was mired in the Watergate scandal.

“A President may not be able fully to discharge the powers and duties of his office if he had to defend a criminal prosecution,” the document reads.

The Democrats’ reasoning goes something like this: Mueller decided not to charge Trump with obstruction of justice only because he was bound by the DOJ guideline, despite having found evidence that Trump committed a crime.

Is Tucker Carlson's assessment of the Mueller disaster accurate?

And Democrats sure thought they were right after the answer Mueller gave Lieu.

“The reason again that you did not indict Donald Trump is because of the OLC opinion stating that you cannot indict a sitting president, correct?” Lieu asked.

“That is correct,” Mueller responded.

After playing a clip of this exchange, Carlson said, “Ooh, Get it?”

“Orange Mussolini was a criminal all along! Mueller never said Trump committed a crime in his report,” Carlson said.

“He also didn’t say it in his press conference, or in his opening statement. But finally, Ted Lieu was able to extract the truth from Robert Mueller. President Trump is a criminal. Except not.”

Why not? Well, Mueller would soon correct himself.

“I want to add one correction to my testimony this morning,” he said during the opening statement of his second hearing of the day, this one before the House Intelligence Committee.

“I want to go back to one thing that was said this morning by Mr. Lieu who said, and I quote, ‘You didn’t charge the president because of the OLC opinion.’ That is not the correct way to say it.

“As we say in the report, and as I said at the opening, we did not reach a determination as to whether the president committed a crime.”

Carlson was all over this, noting that Mueller “wasn’t saying anything new,” but was rather “repeating what he had been saying for months.”

“But Congressman Ted Lieu was not convinced by this,” he said. “Indeed, Ted Lieu smelled a rat. There had to be a reason that Robert Mueller was unwilling to disavow two years of work and all of his prior statements to produce a Democratic talking point for Ted Lieu. What could the reason be? Ted Lieu had a pretty good idea. Clearly, the Russians had gotten to Mueller, too.”

Carlson then played a clip of Lieu telling CNN’s Wolf Blitzer later on: “I don’t know who got to [Mueller], I don’t know who talked to him, but that was very odd what he did.”

But sure, Republicans are the conspiracy theorists!

“Hmm,” Carlson said. “Now to be clear, and this is a diagnosis, this is how crazy people talk. Tinfoil Ted is a nutcake.”

“He’s like your cousin who’s convinced the moon landing was faked on a sound stage. Ted Lieu thinks he’s got secret knowledge that explains everything,” he added.

“How did the Russians get to Robert Mueller? Was it a cash bribe in rubles? Could it have been brainwashing? Are they holding some of his kids hostage in Lubyanka prison? Hopefully one of our dutiful Congressional correspondents will ask Ted Lieu for details. We’d like to know.”

Carlson is absolutely right. The simple truth of the matter is this: Trump didn’t obstruct justice, plain and simple.

Instead of facing that reality, Lieu is going with conspiracy theories instead.
